Carefree Truth
Issue #510, August 29, 2016
Mayor Les Peterson began the August Council meeting by announcing the figures had just been completed for the fiscal year (FY) that ended on June 30th. Carefree has $6,640,000 in unrestricted funds, up from the previous FY. He gave a special thanks to the citizens, merchants, and contractors who donated over $400,000 in materials and services. The Mayor thanked the Council and all those who worked with the Town to make some significant improvements to the downtown area. He reiterated that, "The finances are doing fine."

Councilman Gene Orrico said he noticed the striping and the "boulders" were gone, and asked when the streets by the gateways would be finished. Gary Neiss replied that there are 3 separate contractors involved in the process. The first contractor has removed the striping. They were waiting for the second contractor to do a new coat of slurry seal to make the road surface uniform once again. Then a third contractor would re-stripe the roads. They are trying to coordinate the contractors' schedules. Completion is anticipated by the end of August. Mayor Peterson explained that the original design was traffic engineer driven, but since many citizens had expressed concerns, their input had been taken into account and changes are being made.
Mr. Orrico asked if anyone knew when Ed Lewis would be breaking ground. Mr. Neiss responded that Mr. Lewis is finalizing his financing. His permits are ready and his Public Report has been completed, "so he's checking off the boxes". Councilman Glenn Miller said that the hold up was the Public Report. The Mayor added that financing condos is more complex than financing single homes because condos are built all at one time.
Mr. Miller reported that the caps on top of the Gateways had required a slight re-design to take into account up to 1/2" of movement in the steel due to heat. Once this correction to the plans was made, it had to be passed by the structural engineer and the architect for approval. The capping was now finished and they were ready to install the pre-cast tiles, after which the scaffolding could be removed and the wing walls could be finished. The landscaping should be done by the end of the month. Mayor Peterson noted that the target date had been September or October, before the winter residents returned, so it was ahead of the objective. Mr. Miller said it had gone slower than he had hoped, but when people are doing things for free, you can't push them.
