My name is Darrell Doepke and as a concerned citizen and registered voter of Carefree, I have filed a counter-initiative regarding term limits for our council members and mayor. In order for this to get on the ballot this fall, I need at least 203 valid signatures from registered voters in Carefree by April 4th.
I am not entirely in favor of term limits at the town level. So why did I file this counter-initiative? Because there is another term limits initiative on the ballot that I believe will do more harm than good for our town. The current initiative:
- does not stagger the terms of the council members.
- wants to retroactively count terms that were served prior to the enactment of the initiative, as well as terms that are currently being served.
- would create a lifetime ban and not allow any term-limited member to ever serve again.
If that initiative were to pass, the knowledge base and expertise necessary to run the town's business in the best interests of its citizens would be at great and immediate risk.

My counter-initiative calls for staggered term limits and more clearly defines a path that preserves valuable continuity and critical knowledge base. The complete language of my counter-initiative is below.
I will be set up inside the Carefree Post office this Saturday, March 26th from 10am-2pm to collect signatures from anyone who would vote in favor of more reasonable term limits. Thank you for giving my counter-initiative your serious consideration.
