Last week a paper "flier" was being handed out around town that leveled ludicrous accusations against Mayor John Crane by supporters of the opposing mayoral candidate, Melissa Price. It utilized language generally associated with sexual misconduct in its headline and bullet points. The page began with, "Facts matter" and segued into, "John Crane led attacks on women". A later point referred to "stripping". These terms are considered psycho-manipulation.
Here are the facts: Two of the three women business owners had temporary large plastic banners on the front of their businesses for extended times, rather than the Town Code legally required permanent signs. The third one had been using a retail space for storage, also a violation of Town Code. All three had been contacted verbally on multiple occasions and had been sent a certified letter. Town Code violations are categorized as criminal. These criminal violations were all plea bargained down to misdemeanors, the fines were paid, and the records were expunged. These were in no way "attacks on women". It was a coincident that the three violators were woman.
The woman they accused Mayor Crane of "stripping of her 1st Amendment rights" has been haranguing the Council at Call to the Public for many years. She has sued the Town repeatedly, complete with appeals when all of her frivolous lawsuits lost. She has continued this behavior until she was finally sent a Cease and Desist letter. This is what this group views as "stripping" this woman of her 1st Amendment rights.
The last bullet point seems to invalidate their concern over 1st Amendment rights, since they accuse Mayor Crane of not stripping Carefree Truth of ours by demanding retractions and apologies. Carefree Truth is a private platform and is not under the legal jurisdiction of the Mayor, the Council, or the Town. Carefree is also not legally allowed to demand retractions and/or apologies, or to infringe on the rights of those distributing inflammatory statements such as the ones seen on the paper "flier", or on John Traynor's private platform. They and we are entitled to our views under the 1st Amendment, and those commenting on public figures are legally permitted to do so.
P.S. The group distributing the paper page also supports a candidate who has placed illegal campaign signs around town. It is a federal requirement for all campaign signs to state in writing, on the signs, who paid for the signs.
