Mayor Les Peterson asked Councilman Vince D'Aliesio to read a Proclamation renaming Sundial Plaza to Gerry Jones Plaza and in recognition of a plaque to be installed honoring Gerry Jones. Mr. D'Aliesio said this was long overdue. Mr. Jones is the last remaining Founder of Carefree. They were looking for a fitting tribute to him, and found one.
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the Town of Carefree is a community which acknowledges that the history and contributions of
Gerry Jones
as a pioneer and visionary in the early development of the town of Carefree, and
WHEREAS, the Town of Carefree is a community which encourages its citizens to maximize their personal involvement and participation in the community by giving of themselves wholeheartedly and with total effort, commitment, and conviction to their family, friends, and community, and
WHEREAS, the Town of Carefree is a community which chooses to shine a light on and celebrate individuals like Gerry Jones within its community, who was the early pioneer and laid the early land development planning, built the first home in 1959 as well as over 300 more homes over the course of his 68 year career, with their unique architectural designs, that celebrate the beauty of the Sonoran Desert, and made the Carefree Lifestyle one in which is in harmony with the beautiful outdoors, working hard to preserve our desert by not disturbing the environment over moving earth in order to accommodate conventional construction.
WHEREAS, the Town of Carefree acknowledges Gerry Jones, and is proud to support “Gerry Jones Day” commemorating the date of the dedication of the Gerry Jones Sundial Plaza, and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Les Peterson, Mayor of the Town of Carefree, and on behalf of all residents of Carefree, do hereby proclaim March 6th, 2021 to be Gerry Jones Day, with all of the honors and incentives which this proclamation incurs, in honor of all of his contributions to the Carefree community, from his arrival with real estate developers KT Palmer & Tom Darlington on a hand-shake agreement to this desert oasis in 1952, to his influence as a master builder, architect, and developer still today.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Town of Carefree to be affixed at Carefree Town Hall this 2nd day of March in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-one.

During Current Events, Mr. D'Aliesio reminded everyone that this Saturday, March 6th, will be Gerry Jones Day. There will be a dedication of the boulder Mr. Jones selected from his property and had placed next to the sundial, along with a plaque the Cave Creek Museum has dedicated to Mr. Jones. It will be unveiled this Saturday morning at 10 AM, with some commentary from Mr. Jones and his wife Leslie. Before the unveiling, The Varsity Sports Show will be broadcast by the sundial from 9-10 AM. Mayor Peterson and Vice Mayor John Crane will be on hand for the sports show to provide some commentary and to be interviewed. It will be livestreamed on AM1060. The Town will be livestreaming the Gerry Jones event as well. Mr. D'Aliesio thanked the Mayor and Vice Mayor in advance.

Mayor Peterson explained that the second Proclamation was in support of AT&T's services to veterans in Carefree and in the entire foothills area. Vice Mayor Crane added that the Proclamation was meant to acknowledge the work AT&T has done for the veterans in Carefree.
AT&T Veterans has run a charity Veteran's Day Race for 2 years in a row. They were very helpful in organizing the website and coordinating the financial effort behind the Carefree Veterans Memorial Monument. They do a lot to help the veterans in our community beyond that. AT&T Veterans is dependent upon funding from AT&T to support their organization. The Vice Mayor wanted to acknowledge all the work AT&T Veterans has done for us, to let those funding it know how much we appreciate it, and to encourage those folks at AT&T to continue to help AT&T Veterans.
