Carefree Truth
Issue #517, September 30, 2016
Councilwoman Melissa Price asked if a committee had been formed to address zoning code changes for signs in the downtown that she had requested. Gary Neiss reminded her that the Planning and Zoning Commission reviews zoning code changes and will be reviewing it in context with a comprehensive update to the signage code. Mayor Les Peterson said he's been talking to other East Valley mayors and they are dealing with sign code updates as well. They will all be exchanging ideas and information.
Councilman Glenn Miller reported the gateways lighting and landscaping should be completed by the end of the month. Councilman Gene Orrico asked when the streets by the gateways would be finished. Mr. Neiss said the slurry company finally finished their part. After the curing time of 7-10 days, the stripping company would come and the project would be complete. Ms. Price asked if the Town knew what the striping would look like ahead of time. Mr. Neiss replied that they have plans. "It's essentially returning to the original configuration." Ms. Price asked if the turn lanes would be dotted, not solid. Mr. Neiss confirmed they would be dotted.
Vice Mayor John Crane announced that Basha's will be having their Grand Opening ceremony tentatively on Saturday, October 8th, at 9 AM. He reminded everyone that Basha's could have left Carefree, but they stayed and invested a lot of money in the store. He encouraged Carefree residents to attend, showing their appreciation and support. Mayor Peterson said the Basha family will be there. Jim Van Allen spoke with some "big wigs" who were there, as well as with a couple of managers, to ask if they had gotten feedback from their customers as to what was wanted. They said they had gotten lots of input from shoppers.
(Lyn's note: I checked with Vice Mayor Crane today, and he told me that the Grand Opening ceremony is now scheduled for this coming Wednesday, October 5th, starting at 9 AM. It will last for approximately one hour. I hope to see you there!)
