Carefree Truth

Mayor Les Peterson said that 4 years ago, Sanderson Lincoln generously contributed money for improvements, including the shade sails, to the Carefree Desert Gardens amphitheater. They also established an award, given to an individual Carefree resident who contributes to the welfare of the residents of Carefree. Recipients of this award must have a positive spirit, accomplish goals and bring people together. The first two recipients were past Council member Arthur Gimson and past Mayor David Schwan. Last year's winner was Harry Vardakis, who for 30 years has been a Carefree Broker/Realtor/Developer. He is forward thinking and always has the best interest of the town at heart.
This year's recipient is Steve Woods, owner of Tech4Life. Council members, the Carefree/Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, and Carefree business owners all expressed support for Mr. Woods.
The one-of-a-kind award is symbolic. Gina Kaegi read the following: "The Spirit of Carefree award consists of a dichroic glass sculptor, handcrafted by local glass artisan, Peggy Pettigrew Stewart, who is known for her fascination with light and prismatic color in her glass art. Authorized and blessed by the Hopi Tribe and Clan, thereby protecting the spirit, the glass is a portrait of a life mask of Native Hopi, Chief of the Blue Bird Tribe, Lance Polingyouma. He is currently the oral historian for the tribe and works for the Heard Museum. The colors of the glass change with the light and tend to mimic the desert sunrise and sunsets seen over Black Mountain due to the native minerals of gold, copper and silver formed and melted into the glass at 1600 °F degrees." She then personally thanked Mr. Woods and his team, who have always been there to help at all the different events in Carefree.
Mayor Peterson presented the award to Mr. Woods, commenting that it is a well deserved honor, thanking him for his contributions to the community, and joking that in the future he would be referred to as "Sir Steve Woods". Upon seeing it, Mr. Woods called the beautiful glass art piece "truly amazing". The Mayor also presented Mr. Woods with an envelope containing an additional monetary award.

Mr. Woods then presented the Mayor with a large framed photograph, a "community gift" for the Town. Tech4Life had originally taken the photo for the wall of the Black Mountain Coffee Shop. The Coffee Shop has a photo of Carefree before houses had been built that was taken by Carefree founder KT Palmer. In order to replicate the angle and the light in that photo, Tech4Life flew their drone at dusk. In this photo, the lights of the new arches and the downtown lights can be seen at sunset. The photo was printed by The UPS Store, so is "truly a community gift".

Mayor Peterson said Mr. Woods and Tech4Life "have done a tremendous job for literally all of the non profits here". There are "technical problems that arise and there is no way for us mortals to solve them, but Steve helps us immeasurably, often times on a pro bono basis, so we thank him for everything he has done".
