Carefree Truth
Issue #577, July 7, 2017
Mayor Les Peterson announced that the July Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 11th, since the first Tuesday of the month is the 4th of July. He also acknowledged that Herbert and I had celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary the day before. He thanked us for all we do. With the exception of one Councilman, the Council and audience members applauded, and we wish to thank them.

During Call to the Public, Mayor Peterson reminded Robert Jacobsen that once an item has gone into the legal arena, the Town cannot comment on it. Mr. Jacobsen said it has been 6 months since he began his "quest". The "Township" authorized the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to install bike lanes. This was done by taking about 3' from each side of the medians on Cave Creek Road, which resulted in "the hazardous situation with the large, overgrown trees there". It's been 6 months, and the trees are still growing. The Township removed 1 tree after he "petitioned to have all the trees looked at". He hasn't received a reply since May and wants to know the status of his quest.
Mr. Jacobsen spoke with ADOT, the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO). There have been over 700 accidents on Cave Creek Road so far this year, a number he called "staggering". He said that if a 5-6 year old dies in a car accident, that life is worth $4 million. A 20 year Carefree resident, he travels in both directions on Cave Creek Road daily. Something needs to be done about the trees. The Township won't do it. He wants an official statement from the Township. The trees must be removed. He said he appreciates their time and will be back again next month, when he expects a response to his "street report".
Town attorney Mike Wright said that during Call to the Public, the Council can do one of two things. They can respond to criticism or they can refer an issue to the staff. That is all they can do.
Mayor Peterson said, "Let's assume that you criticized us. We disagreed with you and didn't feel you had any basis, while on our side we had ADOT traffic engineers who had done this and looked at this. You are 1 of 3600 residents of the town. Cave Creek Road does not run only in the town of Carefree. You cite 700 accidents. I've never seen any kind of statistics. Come with a traffic engineer. Get a degree yourself. Give us something credible. Since it's in litigation, since you have filed complaints, we will await the completion of that. Thank you, sir."
