Mayor Les Peterson reported that after the expenditures, $593,990 was added to the reserves at the end of the past fiscal year. This was due to very careful monitoring of the funds with which the Town was entrusted. He thanked the Council and the entire staff for their very hard work. The Mayor wanted to point out something positive.

Gary Neiss reported that the Council Chambers tenant improvements were progressing very nicely. The environmental evaluation, confirming there was no asbestos in the material being removed, took two weeks to generate. After the report was completed, work began in mid August. The walls are out and the structural beam, which will be relocated, was exposed. The existing 3" sewer line will be changed to a 4" line required for public buildings, necessitating one change order. That money will be taken from the 10% contingency fund. Mr. Neiss invited the public to "poke their heads in" if they are interested in seeing the work.

Mayor Peterson announced 2 Proclamations to be adopted. The first was Constitution Week: September 17th - 23rd. This week is singled out each year to commemorate the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America. The second was Extra Mile Day: November 1st. Carefree is a community which encourages its citizens to maximize their personal contributions to the community by giving themselves wholeheartedly and with total effort, commitment and conviction. https://vimeo.com/231812837
And last but not least, Stan Lowther "Stan the Man" celebrated his 100th birthday with a well attended surprise party organized by his dear friend, Norm Kolbe, last Tuesday in the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion. Stan's actual birthday was on September 11th, but since he was unaware of the planned party that day, he decided to get in his car and drive to Oregon to visit his sons. Stan's an amazing guy.
At the party, Mayor Peterson read an official Proclamation, signed by the Mayor and the Town Clerk and containing the Town of Carefree gold seal, declaring September 11th Stan Lowther Day. Stan was so touched by the Proclamation that, with tears in his eyes, he kissed the paper when the Mayor handed it to him. The Pink Ladies did a couple of cheers, and Kevin Glenn was on hand with his keyboard. Norm talked about Stan's life, and Stan also told some stories, and recited a couple of limericks. I was on hand with the video camera, so click below to see the party. Everyone had lots of fun.
