Carefree Truth
Issue #597, October 9, 2017
I was informed yesterday by one of our readers that Councilman Jim Van Allen passed away on Saturday evening.
"He went in on Friday not feeling well, was put in ICU. Declining blood pressure until the end. No pain and went quietly."
Fred Drawert
Herbert's and my condolences to Mr. Van Allen's family.
After observing a moment of silence for the victims of the recent hurricanes and the shooting in Las Vegas, he congratulated Town Clerk Kandace French on her engagement to be married.
The Mayor next said, "I take my hat off to the staff, to the entire staff." They keep the Town going, in addition to fulfilling all the legislative requirements.
There are two major economic development initiatives. One is marketing, creating excitement and reasons to come up here to see the beauty of our town. The other is land planning and development. The implementation of these two initiatives has brought over $90 million in new investments in the Town of Carefree, including the luxury apartments going into the downtown, the new ownership and re-activation of Spanish Village, the Bashas remodel, and new ownership of the Carefree Resort by a world class health and wellness resort organization.
The Mayor thanked each and every one of the staff members; Gary, Kandace, Gina, Stacey, Vicki, Jim and Mike. "Thank you for all you do. It's tireless." He said a city the size of Mesa, which is larger in terms of population than Minneapolis, would have a hard time putting on the same level of events that Carefree does with a marketing staff of one. The staff received an ovation.

During Current Events, Mayor Peterson announced it was Domestic Violence Awareness Day, aimed at making people aware of the problem and the efforts being made to stop it. He was wearing his sole purple shirt in support of the issue. Mary Peterson was in the audience and also wore a purple shirt.
He reported that sales tax revenue for July and August this year was up 24.97% over July and August of 2016, noting that the new fiscal year is off to an excellent start. Town accountant Jim Keen said much of this was due to the construction sales tax generated by new homes that were completed and sold, but retail was up as well. People are restocking their homes at Lowe's, CVS, and Ace, and Basha's is doing very well. The deli department is quite popular.
Mayor Peterson is getting indications from the Scottsdale Board of Tourism that they are anticipating a good tourist season, due in part to the storm damage in Florida and the Caribbean which could drive more people to Arizona. The Town is looking forward to a continuation of the positive flow of construction sales tax along the Cave Creek Road corridor, and strong sales among the retailers.
