Carefree Truth
Issue #601, November 10, 2017
Vice Mayor John Crane announced 3 upcoming events that will take place in the Carefree Desert Gardens in November. The first is Carefree Veteran's Day, which will be held in the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion (tomorrow) Saturday, November 11th, from 3-5 PM. There will be two WWII veterans in attendance. Blaine Keith served in the Pacific theater as a fighter pilot. He will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. 93 year old Lew Jenkins, a U.S. Army Captain who fought in the Battle of the Bulge, is the keynote speaker. Local non profits, the Sonoran Arts League and the YMCA, will share what they do for veterans. A bagpiper will play "Amazing Grace". Refreshments will be provided by the Carefree Coffee Roastery and by Kwanis. This is the 9th year the Town has put on this event. Every year it has been nice but this year the Vice Mayor feels it will be exceptional.

On Thursday, November 16th, at 4 PM, a ribbon cutting will be held for The Little Free Library (LFL), which was installed this summer near the gila monster slide. The LFL is sponsored by the Desert Foothills Library (DFL), was paid for by Carefree residents Linda and Mark Putney, and the Town of Carefree provided the real estate. Although small, it gets a tremendous amount of use. DFL and local residents keep it full of books for both adults and children. Although the Town doesn't spend a lot of money for social services, it does provide a venue for local social service organizations to make themselves known.

Sanderson Lincoln will have cars on display by the sundial on Saturday, November 18th, from 8 AM-4 PM for the Driven to Give program. For every test drive, they will donate $20, up to $8,000, to the Veteran's Heritage Project (VHP). VHP encourages students to interview veterans and the stories are compiled in books. It's a good experience for the students and the veterans. VHP is a big part of the Carefree Veteran's Day event each year. Kwanis will also be holding their Pancake Breakfast in the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion that morning, so it's a good day to come over to the Gardens.
