Carefree Truth
Issue #608, December 4, 2017
The Main Event Band played a special version of "God Bless America", featuring vocals by Chance McLaughlin and Katelyn Reinhart of Cactus Shadows High School and Jaisi Briel of Thunderbird High School. Next, MC Ted Dimon introduced the members of the Band, which then played a medley of the 6 service hymns. Each service was asked to stand as their hymn was played. At the conclusion of the hymns, Ted turned the program back over to Vice Mayor John Crane.

John said, "Ted has served as our Master of Ceremonies for several years. Once again, he has done a great job! It is a real pleasure to work with you, Ted. Thank you!"
"First, thank you Lew Jenkins for spending your Veterans Day with us and sharing your thoughts and lessons. It is an honor to have you here with us along with your sons – Bob, Tom and DJ. And, thank you to Cliff Dahl. That was some of the most beautiful music that has ever graced the Carefree Gardens."
"Before we close with the history of the Last Post and playing taps, I’d like to share a few thoughts. Today you heard from a community that supports and cares very much about Veterans. These are organizations located nearby, some within Carefree and Cave Creek. They make a strong and effective effort to support veterans. That work is carried out by your neighbors. You may not even know they are doing it. Some are here today.
- The Veterans Heritage Project. Year after year, the VHP at Cactus Shadows HS and Sonoran Trails Middle School with Barbara Hatch is a key part of our community capturing your stories
- The Sonoran Art League and their support of the Veterans Art Program as shared with us by Pam Bell-Demers
- The Desert Foothills YMCA and their veteran enrollment programs and the many things the Y offers vets as explained by former PFC, USMC Don Knowles
- The Association of the US Army and the good work of Lt Col Vic Conner
- The Arizona Youth Leadership Council Phoenix Chapter headed by Col Dick Minor, US Army Retired, a Vietnam vet
- The Build Us Hope organization building homes for homeless vets. Their table is manned by Carefree Councilman Mike Farrar.
- And there is more. The Town of Carefree is in the early stage of assisting the Foothills Caring Corps in support of the Hidden Heroes program to help caregivers – spouses, parents, siblings and friends – who care for vets.
They are all here today. This is a community that acknowledges your service, is thankful for your service, and is willing to make the effort to say thank you and make a difference. They want to help."
"The Last Post is a fitting way to bring today to a close. We have all heard this trumpet call, but may not know the origins of this tradition in military life."
"British Army tradition has given us two bugle calls, called the First and Second Post. The First Post, done in the morning, marks the start of the inspection of the camp and quarters. The Last Post call or 2nd Post was used in British army camps to signal the end of day, when the duty officer returned from his tour of the camp and quarters. At the end of the day, when he had inspected all the sentry posts around the camp, a call was played at each of them to signify that all was well in the garrison. The Last Post call had another function at the close of a day of battle. It signaled to those who were still outside the garrison walls, either fighting, wounded or separated from their comrades that the fighting was done, and to follow the sound of the call to find safety and rest."
"During the 18th and 19th centuries, the use of the "Last Post" was carried to various countries of the British Empire and beyond. In all these countries, including the United States, it is now incorporated into military funerals. It is played as a final farewell, symbolizing the fact that the duty of the soldier is over and that they can rest in peace."
"As we close with the traditional playing of TAPS, I’d like to share the haunting and meaningful words behind this music.
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hill,
From the sky.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.
Go to sleep, peaceful sleep,
May the soldier or sailor,
God keep.
On the land or the deep,
Safe in sleep.
Love, good night. Must thou go,
When the day and the night
Need thee so?
All is well. Speedeth all
To their rest.
Fades the light; And afar
Goeth day, And the stars
Shineth bright,
Fare thee well; Day has gone,
Night is on.
Thanks and praise, For our days,
’Neath the sun, ’Neath the stars,
’Neath the sky,
As we go, This we know,
God is nigh."
TAPS was played by John Williamson on trumpet and Joe Savard on trombone.
The program ended as John said, "Thank you for joining us today. We thank all of you veterans for your service. Stay well and strong, and we look forward to seeing you all next year."
