Carefree Truth
Issue #659, June 25, 2018
(Lyn's note: There have been so many extra meetings, with so much going on at many of them, plus the Memorial Day event, that I am backed up on reporting agenda items from Council meetings this spring. This is the final one from the April meeting. I still have 2 long ones from the May meeting, and several short ones from the June meeting. I will combine some of the June ones into one issue. It's been busy!)
At the April 3rd Council meeting, Jennifer Wildeman explained that the FARE program, which the Consolidated Court has been using since 2010, is a collections program for those who are delinquent on payments to the Court after outreach has been done to help people pay outstanding fines/fees. If they are not in compliance after 90 days, they go into the FARE program. FARE works with a vendor to send out delinquency notices. They prevent re-registration of vehicles and intercept any lottery winnings.
Utilization of FARE is mandated by the Arizona Supreme Court unless courts have an alternative, which they have to pay for themselves. There is no cost to participate in FARE, which is offered by the state.
Councilwoman Cheryl Kroyer summarized that they are taking something that is outdated off the books and reinstating what is necessary to do. Mayor Peterson confirmed that it is the modern version of the program, and asked if there is any difference between this program and others. Ms. Wildeman replied that those courts which don't participate must present an alternative plan and explain why it is more beneficial. Over 90% if the Arizona courts participate in the FARE program. Councilman Gene Orrico said, "Free is good!" Mayor Peterson said, "And effective is good also!"
The motion to approve passed unanimously.
