Issue #692, September 5, 2018
During her talk on the Pumpkin Festival, which will be covered in an issue of Carefree Truth coming soon, Marketing Director Beth Renfro reminded people that Carefree Restaurant Week runs October 1-7. Many of our restaurants are offering special fixed menus with discounts this week. I included this reminder now since this weekend marks the final 3 days of the event.
Mayor Les Peterson and Councilman Mike Farrar stepped down to the podium, where the Mayor presented Mr. Farrar with a plaque in recognition of his 7 years on the Council. He noted that Mr. Farrar had been on the Council longer than anyone else presently on it. Mayor Peterson said that Mr. Farrar had distinguished himself, and he thanked him for his contributions to the Town of Carefree. The Mayor wished him well and presented him with a plaque that read, "The Town of Carefree, presented to Mike Farrar in recognition of your hard work and dedicated service to the Town of Carefree, 2011-2018". "Thank you, sir."

Vice Mayor Crane announced the annual Carefree Veteran's Day event, which will take place on Sunday, November 11th from 3-5 PM in the Pavilion. This marks the 100th anniversary of WWI, so is a significant Veteran's Day, and it is also the 10th anniversary of the Carefree Veteran's Day celebration. Some of the past participants will be joining the celebration. There will be music, Cactus Shadows High School students, the Color Guard, a reading of "The Last Post", and "Taps" will be played. It will be a nice program.

The Mayor announced that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and noted that Town attorney Mike Wright, Councilwoman Cheryl Kroyer, Vice Mayor Crane, and he were wearing something purple to honor it. Carefree lit the sundial with purple that evening. Government officials in Maricopa County are concentrating their efforts on the serious problems posed by domestic violence and by homelessness.

Mayor Peterson also announced that, due to the efforts of Rural/Metro Fire Chief John Kraetz and Rural/Metro Captain Ryan Travis, the Carefree Fire Department received a full grant to purchase a "Big Wheel and Stokes Stretcher". The cost of the equipment is $3,659. The grant was received from Fire House Subs, which puts a portion of their profits into their Foundation for this sort of purpose. He noted that Captain Travis has been very effective in getting grants for the Carefree Fire Department over the years.
The Mayor asked Chief Kraetz to describe the apparatus and its function. Chief Kraetz explained that it has been in use in areas like Camelback Mountain, where you see injured hikers being carried down the mountain by firemen. Patients are secured in a basket with a wheel that can be easily manipulated and that absorbs the impact while going down the trail. It's a very effective tool that previously had to be brought from a long distance. The Chief said they are very grateful for the Firehouse Subs Foundation. They discovered that grants were being sent to surrounding fire departments because the Carefree Fire Department hadn't been requesting them. Captain Travis is very good at ferreting out these grants and succeeded in obtaining this grant on his first attempt.
