On Tuesday, November 13th, Mayor Les Peterson invited newly elected Council member Vince D'Aliesio to the dias to join those who had been re-elected, after which the Mayor and Town Council members were sworn in to office by Town Clerk Kandace Contrares.
She explained that the Mayor would be sworn in first, and asked the Mayor and Council members to sign their Oath of Office upon completion of the ceremony. The Mayor would then discuss the Code of Conduct, after which that document would also be signed by each, and copies of both documents would be provided to each.
Mayor Peterson stood and spoke the Oath. "I, Les Peterson, do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States of America and the Constitution and laws of the State of Arizona. I will bear true faith and allegiance to same, and defend them against all enemies foreign and domestic, and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge the duties of the Mayor of the Town of Carefree according to the best of my abilities, so help me God."

Next, new Councilman D'Aliesio stood and spoke the Oath.
Then all of those re-elected to the Council stood and did the same. Each member stated their names, swearing to discharge the duties of Town Council member according to the best of their abilities. Mrs. Contrares congratulated all of them.

Mayor Peterson said, "We smile at each other and we laugh, but we take it very seriously. We each sign an Oath, the Oath that we just recorded". He added that each Council member is asked to sign a 6 page Code of Conduct as well. "It dictates and puts in contract form what we expect of ourselves and each other. It deals with fairness, impartiality, respect, honesty, and integrity. It is how we deal with each other, the Town staff, residents and outside vendors. The Council should be a reflection of the Town of Carefree. We take this very seriously too." 2-1/2 years ago, a lot of time was spent working on it, and it's fairly comprehensive. The Mayor is a separate election from the Council members, and the Mayor nominates a Vice Mayor. The nomination is then subject to a vote by the Council. "For the last 3 years, John Crane has been the Vice Mayor and has done an absolutely admirable job of doing that." Mayor Peterson nominated Mr. Crane to continue as Vice Mayor for the upcoming term. The duties of the Vice Mayor are to fill in for the Mayor when he or she is unavailable, to provide a sounding board, and to be someone else who is representative of the Town. "And John is absolutely outstanding at that. He is as honest and as forthright as you're going to find in an individual." The Mayor's motion was seconded by Councilwoman Cheryl Kroyer and unanimously approved by the Council. The Mayor congratulated Vice Mayor Crane.
