Mrs. Vanik jokingly noted that, from the introduction, people could tell that she is a "recovering volunteer". "Thank you Vice Mayor Crane. It has been my honor and privilege to bring 'A Salute to Veterans' program to our beautiful town of Carefree. Honoring Veterans has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember."
"I am the daughter of a WWll Army veteran who fought with General Abrams 37th tank battalion in the Battle of the Bulge. Celebrating Veterans Day, remembering the fallen on Memorial Day and waving flags on the 4th of July always reminded us that we live in the land of the free because of the brave. That is just the way it was growing up on that Ohio farm."
"Today I am married to my husband Carroll Vanik, a US Army Captain, (she introduced Carroll) a helicopter pilot whose 1 year tour of duty, 365 days in Vietnam, found him flying over 840 missions. You can read about his acts of heroism, and yes, some Mash like antics, in Volume lll of 'Since you Asked' of the Veterans Heritage Project. I salute you."
"To those in uniform today and to those who have served our country in the past, we honor you today and every day."
Vice Mayor Crane continued, "The second person I'd like to recognize is Arthur Gimson. Two yeas into our Veteran's Day program, as a Councilman, Arthur stepped in to insure the continued success of a program that has always focused upon veterans and students."
"Arthur immigrated to the U.S. from the U.K. in the mid-1960s, became a U.S. citizen in 1979, and has a special love for our country and respect for veterans. Please welcome Arthur Gimson."

Arthur Gimson
Mr. Gimson began, " 'John Brown's body lies a-moldering in the grave. Glory, glory, hallelujah.' " I first heard those words, as a child growing up in England. At that time, I had no idea who John Brown was. The only John Brown that anyone talked about was a Scottish John Brown, a companion to Queen Victoria after Albert, the Prince Consort, had died."
"After coming to the United States in February 1965, I was fortunate to live in Washington DC., and to learn of the work of the founding fathers and the history of this country. As you can imagine, very little of that was taught in the English schools."
"My first UK passport, issued in March 1959, describes my National Status as a 'British Subject'. After my naturalization in 1979, my first USA passport refers to me as a 'citizen'. Over those 20 years between the issuance of two passports, I had learned more about the true meaning of freedom. My freedoms, your freedoms, our freedoms, protected daily by the military. To those that serve and to those who served, a big thank you."
"I also learned that John Brown wanted to abolish slavery, freedom for the slaves, but he also believed that over-throwing the government was the best way to achieve his goal. He was hanged as a traitor in 1859, two years before the start of the civil war."
" 'Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord,
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword, His truth is marching on.' Those words, written by Julia Ward Howe, came to her in 1861, at the Willard Hotel in Washington DC. She had attended a review of Union troops. The marching soldiers were singing a Union Marching tune, 'John Brown’s Body'. The troops and the civilian spectators belted out the song’s chorus: 'Glory, glory hallelujah, his soul is marching on!' As a refined lady, and poet, coming from a privileged background, she thought about writing new lyrics for the rousing melody, some that would be a little less earthy.
" 'I have seen Him in the watchfires of a hundred circling camps; They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps, His day is marching on.' Julia Ward Howe believed that the Union military held the Lord’s favor. She perceived both soldiers and civilians as the instrument of God’s judgment."
"Years later, Julia Ward Howe’s daughter, in an essay on the song, 'the work, not of an individual, but of a nation'. Julia Ward Howe was just the messenger. The story of the creation of the “Battle Hymn” fits nicely with the identity Howe had constructed. Her perception that America was a chosen nation and was serving divinely-orchestrated purposes."
" 'I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal; Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel, Since God is marching on.' As Howe later recalled, 'I awoke in the gray of the morning twilight; and as I lay waiting for the dawn, the long lines of the desired poem began to twine themselves in my mind'. I said to myself, ‘I must get up and write these verses down, lest I fall asleep again and forget them'. She jumped out of bed, found an old stump of a pencil and scrawled the verses on the back of a piece of stationery. Falling back to sleep with a drowsy sense of satisfaction, she thought to herself, 'I like this better than most things that I have written'.
" 'He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat; Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! Be jubilant, my feet! Our God is marching on.' Two and a half months later, her new six-stanza poem was published as the Battle Hymn of the Republic."
" 'In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me.
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.' Julia Ward Howe believed in freedom, as had John Brown, but Mrs. Howe supported the military to protect these freedoms. 'He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave, He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the brave, So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time his slave, Our God is marching on.' "
"The song encourages us to believe that our efforts, and our Country’s efforts, have been sustained for the good of a higher cause, just as it did for Julia Ward Howe, at the Willard Hotel, over 150 years ago."
" 'Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.' "
