Carefree Truth
Issue #703, November 26, 2018
M.C. Ted Dimon noted that this year marks the 100th anniversary of "God Bless America". The words and music were written by Erving Berlin in 1918 but he put it aside until 1938, when the world was teetering on the brink of WWII. The song was introduced by singer and radio personality Kate Smith on her popular radio show. It has become the unofficial national anthem. In those days, every popular song had a preamble before the main part of the tune. It's that preamble that we never hear. He complimented the Main Event Band on their rendition of "God Bless America", complete with the preamble.

"Each year, to close out our tribute to the Veterans, we hear the history behind bugle calls. But before we start the finale, we want to thank all of the many, many organizations and individuals who made today's program possible. And of course, Todd Knowles and the Main Event Band, without whom this could have been a very sedate event! And you Ladies and Gentlemen for being here today to Salute Our Veterans. Thank you one and all."
"And now, I turn the balance of the program back to Carefree's Vice Mayor, John Crane."

Vice Mayor Crane ended the Salute to Veteran's event by sharing the history of "The Last Post".
"The 'Last Post' is a fitting way to bring today to a close. We have all heard this trumpet call, but may not know the origins of this tradition in military life."
"British Army tradition has given us two bugle calls, called the 'First and Second Post'. The first Post, done in the morning, marks the start of the inspection of the camp andquarters. The 'Last Post' call or '2nd Post' was used in British army camps to signal the end of day, when the duty officer returned from his tour of the camp and quarters. At the end of the day, when he had inspected all the sentry posts around the camp, a call was played at each of them to signify that all was well in the garrison."
"The Last Post call had another function at the close of a day of battle. It signaled to those who were still outside the garrison walls, either fighting, wounded or separated from their comrades, that the fighting was done and to follow the sound of the call to find safety and rest. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the use of the 'Last Post' was carried to variouscountries of the British Empire and beyond. In all these countries, including the UnitedStates, it is now incorporated into military funerals. It is played as a final farewell, symbolizing the fact that the duty of the soldier is over and that they can rest in peace. As we close with the traditional playing of 'TAPS', I'd like to share the meaningful words behind this music."
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hill,
From the sky.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.
Go to sleep, peaceful sleep,
May the soldier or sailor,
God keep.
On the land or the deep,
Safe in sleep.
Love, good night. Must thou go,
When the day and the night
Need thee so?
All is well. Speedeth all
To their rest.
Fades the light; And afar
Goeth day, And the stars
Shineth bright,
Fare thee well; Day has gone,
Night is on.
Thanks and praise, For our days,
’Neath the sun, ’Neath the stars,
’Neath the sky,
As we go, This we know,
God is nigh."
"Thank you for joining us today. We thank all of you for helping us to carry on this tradition of honoring our veterans. We look forward to seeing you all next year."

During the November 13th Council meeting, Vice Mayor Crane thanked all those who came out for the 10th Carefree Veteran's Day celebration. It was pointed out to him earlier in the day that he is not only a veteran, he's a veteran of Veteran's Day, having run the Carefree event during his 6 years on the Council. The Vice Mayor felt this year's was one of the best.
A lot of volunteers and local organizations helped, among them the Veteran's Heritage Project, the Kiwanis Club of Carefree, Daughter's of the American Revolution, and Rock the District. He hoped lots of people would come out again for the 11th Carefree Veteran's Day celebration on November 11th, 2019.
