Hi Lyn,
I wanted to let you know that we will be holding a Healing of Memories for Veterans and First Responders Workshop on November 4-6, 2016 at the Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center in Carefree. This will be our 4th workshop at this beautiful retreat center. It has become an annual event and we always receive good support from the Carefree community. Because first responders (police, sheriffs, state troopers, fire fighters and emergency medical system personnel) often experience similar trauma as our veterans, we have opened the workshop up for them too. Veterans and retired first responders can attend for free. Employed first responders can attend at the discounted price of $195 ($245 for a private room). We have scholarships available for first responders for whom the price is a barrier.
Since 2013 we have sponsored nine workshops in Arizona for over 140 men and women veterans from the Korean, Vietnam, First Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan wars. It is designed to help vets heal from the emotional and spiritual affects of their military experiences by providing them the opportunity to tell the stories of the memories that continue to give them pain in a confidential, trusting environment with other veterans. The evaluation results have been uniformly positive with over 90% of the veterans reporting that the workshop has been a major help in their healing from the impact of their military experiences. Here are some quotes from veterans that are typical of the many we have received:
“The workshop furthered me along my path to healing and was quite satisfying.”
“I would recommend the workshop to anyone who experienced trauma in his/her life.”
“I have such a new insight and new perception on life.”
“I’ve been to many workshops before but have never put my story together before. I did it here. Thank you.”
“I waited 24 years to tell this story.”
“Healing of Memories is the master key to my healing and good health of mind, body and spirit.”
"I came in broken - I'm leaving restored, renewed and happy."
Veterans and first responders may register for the workshop by contacting Cyndy at Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center, 480-488-5218 or email: cyndy@spiritinthedesert.org. Registrations are limited to the first 20 who register so if you are interested register early.
Anyone interested in donating a full or partial tax deductible scholarship for a veteran or first responder, can contact Cyndy or visit the website (www.spiritinthedesert.org) and click on "Make a Donation". If someone prefers to donate via check they can make it out to “Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center” and put “Veterans December 2015” in the memo area and mail it to Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center, PO Box 3254, Carefree, AZ 85377 (ATTN: Cyndy Warnier)
Thank you for your past support.

Betsy and I stopped by Basha’s this morning, enjoyed a cup of Starbucks and did a little shopping. The free bag of groceries included many items we’ll enjoy. For those items that are not a good match, the Food Bank or Packages From Home, who will have a table at the Carefree November 11 Veterans Day celebration, will appreciate receiving them.
Best regards,
John Crane
Looked like a very successful Public Safety event. Nice to see so many people involved.

Passing of our dearest Dereth DeHaan
Dear neighbors,
We have to inform every one of the sad news that our wonderful sister, aunt, daughter and friend, Dereth, died unexpectedly on Friday night, September 16, 2016 in a tragic car accident in South Africa while on vacation.
She touched so many lives in a positive way. Even when she was too busy as we all are … she always made time to help others in need.
There will be a memorial service in the near future as soon as arrangements are made. Please keep Dereth & the family in your prayers. She will be greatly missed.
Sincerely,
DeHaan Family
Thank you so much Lyn! Your emails are so helpful to our community!
