The Otter licking the glass, carved by Sue Beatrix (Sue also worked with Ray on the elephant & mouse sand sculpture) was still in Ray's studio when Herbert took this. It will be one of the pumpkins featured in the lit cactus tanks in the Gardens during the Festival.

As a Carefree Resident and 2nd term Councilman in the Town of Carefree I am aware of the hard and diligent work the present and past council persons are doing and have done in trying to preserve the beauty and integrity or our town. If we continue to do nothing in the downtown business core area, we might as well stop in at Lowes Building Dept., purchase 4 ft. X 8 ft. sheets of plywood and board up all the downtown empty business windows.
A prime example of not keeping up with the current times is the Sears & Kmart companies. They sat on their laurels and are on the verge of Bankruptcy. Their motto was form the Cradle to the Grave. At one time they were the Largest Retailer in the U.S. selling baby buggies, pre-fab homes, caskets and headstones. At present they need Two Billion Dollars to stay afloat.
We do not want to go down that Complacent Path. REMEMBER, TO DO NOTHING IS DOING SOMETHING.
Respectfully,
Gene Orrico
I am very excited about all the new happenings in Carefree. I appreciate all you have done to keep everyone informed of many positive things that the town has pursued and accomplished.
I know that we frequently lose members of our community. I found it disconcerting that in the last newsletter the passing of Jim Van Allen was almost buried. Agree with Jim or disagree -he was a presence and a councilman and member of the community. It was sad that there was no further acknowledgement.
Suzanne Mowry
(Lyn's note: Our Carefree Truth newsletter that came out the Monday following Jim's death on Saturday the 7th began with this. Perhaps you missed it, but we did feature it in the next issue we published. This was all I knew at the time and is still all I know other than what I read in the Sonoran News, which was apparently told before anyone else, and in more detail. I did not learn about it from John Traynor or anyone else associated with Jim. Those at Town Hall were not informed either. In fact, I sent the email from my reader to Town Hall, and it was the first anyone knew about his death. Information was not forthcoming from the sources. Someone had heard he had a hip replacement the weekend before that, but even that was hearsay. According to the Sonoran News, he fell and broke the hip, so the hip replacement surgery rumor was inaccurate. No one knew what hospital he was in, or the status of his health. It was all played very close to the vest by his family and friends. I'm guessing that was his wish, and if so, it was right of them to honor it.

I was informed yesterday by one of our readers that Councilman Jim Van Allen passed away on Saturday evening.
"He went in on Friday not feeling well, was put in ICU. Declining blood pressure until the end. No pain and went quietly."

Sorry. Somehow didn’t see that one and was concerned. Keep up the good work.

Dear John Traynor:
It is always sad to receive the news of the passing of a previous colleague even though we disagreed on almost everything. We both moved in to the Town during the same 2002-03 period. We shared the Council dais in 2011 prior to his resignation during that first two-year term. We both spent many years in the hospitality industry, his in construction and development and mine in day-to-day operations, but we looked at things differently. I am not saying either viewpoint is right or wrong, as you have written, just a perspective of whether a glass is half full or half empty. There are often two ways at looking at problems, especially those concerning financial matters. Jim would look at whether expenses could be reduced, I would often feel that increased revenues could offset management's mistakes! Both impact the bottom line.
I do know that Jim liked Carefree. I do too. He liked it the way it was in the past. I did too, but times change. Yes, they may have been good times, but that was yesterday. They say that you can never go back. (Whoever "they" may be!) What's the post office going to be like when it re-opens? I will miss Don and Andrew. Will it be better? I don't know.
While it is difficult to comment about an individual that cannot respond, I must point out that just because you may agree with Jim's position does not make it right. With regard to the "first- ever very tall apartment complex", as you called it, Jim was the sole dissenting vote. If his viewpoint was correct, that means the other six Members of the Town Council were wrong. It also implies that the Planning and Zoning Commission was also wrong. Only time will tell.
It is not my job to defend the Mayor, who you criticized for only "mentioning" the fact that Jim was absent and chose not to state any reason. I can only guess that Mayor Peterson was mindful of the health privacy regulations (HIPAA). Who wants their health information made public?
Enough said,
Arthur Gimson

If I'm reading the Christmas stuff correctly, it appears that the Christmas light parade no longer exists, and that seems to ring a bell from prior notes on discussions. Is that correct?
Kathy Riemer
(Lyn's note: The parade has moved to 10 AM on December 9th. They did that because too many people almost got hit by cars walking from where they parked to the town center along dark Tom Darlington Dr. & Cave Creek Rd.)
Hi Lyn, thanks for this update. Where is the 100 acres in North Carefree located?
Phyllis Strupp
(Lyn's note: It's comprised of 3 parcels which are north of Grapevine Rd. and east of the 80th St. Alignment, which borders Cave Creek.)
The rumors surrounding this particular “news" item and your ensuing explanation is a good example of why it is important to ascertain the facts before any of us disseminate incorrect information. I appreciate your effort to bring clarity to the rumors.
John D Nimsky
(Lyn's note: Thanks, John. Did you play the game "Whisper Down the Lane" as a kid? It starts out with someone saying something, then a circle of people whisper it into the ear of the next person in the circle. When it gets back to the starting point, the last person says what they heard. It rarely bears much similarity to the original phrase. This is what seemed to be happening here. I was truly startled by the Facebook comments sent by one of my readers, which I included in the newsletter.)
Thanks for the update, Lyn. Can you tell me what, if anything, has transpired with the developer’s request to rezone to high density the forty acres north of Cave Creek? Thanks.
Ron Huffman
(Lyn's note: The Stagecreek application has not been submitted to the Town as of now.)
