John Traynor recently submitted a letter to the Sonoran News again attacking Town Administrator Gary Neiss and the Town Council. He wrote, “Another example in Carefree is the Town Administrator who has been tirelessly lamenting the lack of a local Property Tax for years in the hope that residents will fall for the pickpocket move. He says it over and over in an effort to make it psychologically palatable. The Mayor, Vice Mayor, and several members of the Carefree Town Council are now resorting to a similar strategy to sell some fishy business.”
Gary Neiss has not "been tirelessly lamenting the lack of a local Property Tax for years". He has been pointing that out proudly. It has been you, John, who for years has been accusing Gary of wanting a property tax because he has pointed to the lack of one to illustrate that Carefree has been well run, a notion you have always denied. You have a very long history of anger and negativity, which seem to be an integral part of your hard wiring. The fact is that Carefree does not have a local property tax due to the diligence of our Town staff members and Councils, both past and present, the same Town staffs and Councils that you have long been attacking. I remember, years ago, your persistent claim that the Town would soon be bankrupt. You know, the same town that has a current reserve of around $7 million, one of the highest, per capita, in the state.
John Traynor went on to write, “There is much hoopla about filling the “big ugly dirt lot” in town with a rental apartment complex, a Tall one.”
I remember when the Carefree Desert Gardens was a big ugly dirt lot. I also remember squeals of protest from some quarters about spending the money to make it into a garden. Just as the Gardens have improved the downtown, I believe the $40 million rental project will also improve the town core, as opposed to looking at a dirt lot, and the rental tax income produced by the luxury apartments will be a welcomed addition to the Town coffers, helping to stave off a local property tax.
State Shared Revenues are declining. How construction sales tax, which is the biggest chunk of the sales tax revenue, is collected has also been amended by the State. Neither change is favorable to Carefree. People who analyse situations and advise municipalities on revitalization for a living have, for years, said Carefree needs people living in the downtown core who wish to walk to places where they can shop and dine. Our downtown is away from the arterial streets and easy to miss as potential customers drive by, ending up in Cave Creek, but it is as pedestrian friendly as it gets once people are inside.
Town staff's and Council's efforts are paying off. Extensive investments are being made in the town, and new businesses are opening. Exciting events are being held that draw people and provide great exposure to Carefree. Yes, John, Carefree is changing, for the better, with no help from you or your small angry contingent.
In trying to understand John Traynor and his angry disciples, I did some research. Below are 3 quotes that I believe describe this group to a tee:
1- When life doesn’t go their way, when someone doesn’t see things as they do, when their best laid plans get interrupted or they make a mistake, they simply can’t tolerate it.
2 - It’s more important to win than to be right.
3 - Making a lot of noise and threatening is their way of reasserting their right to “respect” by others.
I have no respect for you, John Traynor. I support the Carefree staff and Council. They are doing a great job.
