Town of Carefree Mayor Speaks to Home Owner Associations
Mayor Les Peterson Addresses Future Sustainability
The Mayor of Carefree, Les Peterson, will be scheduling meetings with local HOA’s to strengthen communication lines between residents and the Town of Carefree about the exciting new projects happening within the town limits. The Mayor will be calling HOA representatives to schedule meetings starting in October and running through March. All meetings will include a formal presentation along with Q and A immediately following.
“I genuinely feel it is necessary to share information regarding the progress we are making with residents, and to meet face-to-face to discuss these projects about how we are building a sustainable future for generations to come. Carefree is a jewel and we all want to preserve its beauty while making it viable and sustainable,” shared Mayor Peterson.
Over $90 million of private funds has been invested in Carefree within the past year, including the Bashas’ and Historic Spanish Village renovations, the new CIVANA Wellness Resort ownership at the Carefree Resort, and the recently approved new luxury apartment homes in the downtown core. These all translate into long term financial sustainability for the Town, quality businesses and better services for residents and the creation of a vibrant community in the downtown area.
The Mayor encourages any group to invite him to meet for a productive dialogue. Please contact him at Mayor@Carefree.org or call the Town Hall 480-488-3686.
Let me set the record straight. I will not accept "the altered facts and several unsupported generalizations" and/or "the distortions and colorations" presented by John Traynor. I began writing to Carefree Truth Letters from readers because I was tired of reading and listening to John Traynor and Jim Van Allen spreading disinformation at Council meetings and on blogs, as well as in Letters to the Editor in the Sonoran News/Agenda, which rag they have both used as their political stage for many years.
I started filming all the Council meetings in November of 2009. My early videos were instrumental in the failure of the bogus recall effort against Mayor David Schwan. Losing candidate John Traynor was complicit in the lies told about Mayor Schwan then, and he continues to confabulate his own version of the "facts" now. Recently, Carefree Truth produced deeds showing who owns the property formerly owned Ed Lewis. Neither John Traynor nor Jim Van Allen ever admitted they were wrong. Instead, they doubled down on their positions, so it would seem they believe that the "conspiracy" reaches all the way to the Maricopa County Recorder's office.
John Traynor's latest attack involves "transparency". He begins by stating that public records requests cost 50 cents per page. This is only true if a printed copy is required. Most requests are made and records are sent electronically. This is a free service and John Traynor knows this. He then goes on to accuse "the Mayor and at least one other council member" of "inviting individuals and groups to private discussions to 'clear up misinformation' ", with no "paper trail", thus "no accountability". It is the responsibility of elected officials to meet with their constituents. This is normal, not some kind of sneaky method of avoiding transparency. If partners John Traynor and Jim Van Allen think all conversations with constituents should be held only at Council meetings, why do they appear together consistently at neighborhood participation meetings, talking to and riling up attendees with their inane rhetoric? Jim Van Allen has actually violated the applicants' legal right to due process in 2 potentially upcoming cases and has to recuse himself when they come before the Council. Can anyone make a public records request about what was said to those neighbors? Nooooo. What happened to your transparency?
Bottom line: John Traynor and Jim Van Allen are not interested in what's good for the town; they are bullies of the worst kind, who only want to make themselves important. They have no solutions to offer. They can only advance by launching their unfounded attacks on the Mayor, other Council members, the staff, and anyone who disagrees with them or calls them on their BS. This has been the historic recurring MO of their entire tribe of angry naysayers. In my opinion, angry and stupid is no way to go through life.

I don't know Mr. Van Allen or anything about his reputation but I do agree with him and his opinions regarding the topic of apartments in Carefree. First of all the area is much too small to hold over 150+ apartments in my opinion. Comparing the heights of the Lutheran Retreat and future apartments is so ridiculous...the Retreat being one story on top of a hill looks nothing like 4 stories of concrete that meets the eye sidewalk level. This mass overload in a place where the post office has traffic, it will be a car jam.
Now, if someone came up with a small up-scale grocery store, a small boutique hotel with 30-40 rooms, small movie theatre, an ice cream shop where people could lazily walk around and shop, yes, yes by all means.
