Following our Veteran's Day program the Town received many compliments in response to the event, especially regarding our two speakers, US Army (retired), Major Arden Rowley and US Air Force (retired), Captain Suzanna Ausborn.
Barbara Hatch, the founder of the Veterans Heritage Project (VHP), was instrumental in identifying and introducing both Major Rowley and Captain Ausborn to the Carefree Veterans Day program. Both had been interviewed by students and then had their stories published in the annual VHP interview compilation, “Since You Asked”. Major Rowley appeared in volume IV and Captain Ausborn appeared in volume XIII. Both are strong supporters of VHP. We have both volumes, and more behind the front desk at Town Hall. You are welcome to stop by, sit down and read them.
VHP connects students with veterans in their communities. 7th through 12th grade students are responsible for interviewing, writing and celebrating their veterans’ stories of military experience. These interviews and stories then become published in VHP’s annual hard-covered books, entitled “Since You Asked”, and are kept as permanent audio-visual archives at the Library of Congress, in Washington, DC. This is a fantastic program for both students and veterans. https://veteransheritage.org/
John Crane
Vice Mayor, Town of Carefree
Nice coverage! As a Vietnam Era Vet, I appreciate those who pay, those who served, tribute.
Henry Molder
(Lyn's note: Hank is the guy who plays the Native American flutes so beautifully in the Carefree Desert Gardens. If you are so inclined, stop and thank him for his service.)
Lyn,
Thank you and Herbert for doing this each year. I hope this
clip "goes viral". Everyone should hear Major Rowley's message.
Ted Dimon
(Lyn's note: Ted has the Veteran's Day MC from Day One. Thanks, Ted! By the way, I cried my eyes out while writing Arlen Rowley's story.)
I can't believe Herbie keeps up with all of this. Very nice. Great story Hitch. I hope the young people of today somehow appreciate the loss many went through so they can have the freedom they enjoy today. Thanks again.
Ron Crouse
Thank you Lyn for sharing such a heartfelt tribute to our men and women serving and protecting our freedom.
Archie & Beth Malone
Thank you, Lyn, for all that you do: gathering and inspiring the local community with uplifting news and events. Have a blessed Thanksgiving.
Sincerely,
Nicola Morton
