Lyn:
In a recent issue of Carefree’s Future Matters, I read John Traynor’s rant (he calls it “a distressing note”) about the “new” USPS facility in Carefree, calling it a SNAFU. It is a pity that that he seems to be looking for any reason to be critical, especially if it gives him the opportunity to include “Carefree” into his perception of a problem.
The notices about package delivery using 100 Easy Street and the PO Box number were posted all over the post office long before the USPS announced that they were taking over the facility from the previous contract post office service. It is nothing new.
Personally, I am pleased with the ‘new’ USPS facility even though I miss Don and Andrew. The old contract office would not accept International Global Priority Mail, which I would use to send documents to my clients in Australia and Japan. It was less expensive than FedEx, DHL, etc. and offered tracking. Having to go to the Carefree location for my mail, resulted in my having to make a separate trip to the Cave Creek ‘real’ post office.
I also like the new boxes for large parcels. It is allowing the retail counter to have fewer people with yellow cards in line than in the past. There are still yellow cards because the Carefree post office gets about 500 parcels a day and they only have 100 new boxes. That’s a 20% reduction in yellow cards, better than nothing.
Equally sad for Mr. Traynor to rave about a problem in Carefree that exists purely between a relationship between the United States Postal Service and FedEx. These are two pretty large entities and I doubt that anything will change because of Mr. Traynor’s unhappiness.
As I understand the situation, both entities are looking for ways to increase revenues, or to lower their operating costs. FedEx was looking to save dollars by dropping off packages to a central facility instead of multiple addresses for its basic service. I think it was called “the last mile” and was written up, by the media, quite extensively. The USPS was being criticized for the contract as critics claimed that the USPS would lose money, but the Postmaster-General said that they would not enter into any agreement that didn’t make money for the post office. (No details of the contract were made public.)
In addition, FedEx can make money if people want to pay for a higher level of service and get door-to-door delivery. The choice is Mr. Traynor's. Pay the piper and he'll play you a tune! And I find it amusing that he would call it a "SNAFU". If I want the convenience of super-fast, overnight, FedEx door-to-door delivery, often with packages coming after 5:00 pm, I have that choice. If I only care about getting packages when I go and get my mail, I will willingly wait. It's all about whether I want it badly enough and how much I am willing to pay..
I have no idea where Mr. Traynor lives. He writes about being "several miles" away; what is several? I make a 5-mile round trip, as you may do, but I combine it with stops at the Caring Corps, Ace Hardware, the UPS Store, China Joy, Bashas', etc. Carefree isn’t that big a town that the post office is far away; even the north-east corner or the eastern boundary are not much farther away than the south-west corner of Carefree Highway and N Cave Creek Road, near where I live.

Friends and Neighbors,
Each year Executive Director Pam DiPietro and I work on soliciting TAX CREDIT donations as an important funding source for the Food Bank.
I have supported the Foothills Food Bank Tax Credit program for a number of years.
In doing so, I am able to direct where my tax dollars are spent and at the same time I’m supporting the work the Food Bank does for our community.
The Food Bank has been serving families for over 25 years and our tax dollars will enable Pam and the many volunteers to continue to benefit our community.
Best regards,
