During Mayor Peterson’s 3 short years as the Mayor of Carefree, I have had the privilege of serving as his Vice Mayor and have gained a unique perspective to tell you about the man.
Les is a full time, dedicated Mayor. His focus on utilities, economic development, infrastructure and marketing has resulted in the largest financial surplus in Town history, revitalized Bashas, Historic Spanish Village and CIVANA, brought the installation of bike lanes with little cost to the Town, and helped to convince Scottsdale to build much needed turn lanes on Carefree Highway. He is in the office virtually every morning and stays well into the afternoon. If not in the office, he’s probably attending to Town business elsewhere. When presented with a challenge, Les is creative, thinking through solutions, always welcoming ideas and giving credit where credit is due. Time and again, I have seen Les take the initiative, work with others, put together a thoughtful plan and execute. The Drone Laser Light Show and his meticulous and knowledgeable approach to water are only the two most recent examples. Les has provided leadership to the Council and Town Staff and is committed to the position full time. I honor and respect these behaviors. To be effective these behaviors and dedication are critical to the success and future of our Town.
But there is more work to be done - securing a reliable quality water supply for all of our residents, continuing to drive economic development that does not compromise the character of Carefree and improving vehicle and pedestrian safety on Carefree’s roadways. Les Peterson is the best Mayoral candidate to solve these issues. He is the right man at the right place at the right time.
I encourage you to join me in voting for Les Peterson for Mayor of Carefree.
Best regards,
John Crane
Vice Mayor, Carefree, AZ
I love the piece about Leadership. Sooo true.

My purpose in writing is I am very concerned about the tone of this year’s Carefree Town election. I appreciate public servants like Carefree’s Town Council members. These individuals donate their time and energy in an effort to support the town. So why do we suddenly have unpleasant campaign tactics that have not existed in the past. The campaign rhetoric is at best impolite and at worst is threatening to free speech. Most upsetting, the discussion is not centered on the issues facing Carefree like the water supply, an appropriate tax base and future development.
In particular, I am disappointed in the campaign restrictions at the Post Office which I view as fundamentally wrong. I have 2 major issues with the current restrictions.
1- The Post Office is a public area that is regularly visited by Carefree residents since everyone needs to pick up their mail. In that respect, it would seem like the perfect place to display campaign materials. It could be a “one stop” information center for the town election with materials on each and every candidate.
2- As a contrasting view, it would seem that campaigning should be prohibited at the Post Office since it is the voting location. This is a mail-in election and everyone votes at the Post Office. Campaigning is not permitted, by law, at polling places.
Based on the situation, it would seem that everyone either should or should not be allowed to campaign at the Post Office. But, the rules should be the same for everyone. This is not the situation. Currently 2 candidates (Mike Farrar and Gene Orrico) are allowed to campaign at the Post Office and the other candidates (Les Peterson, Cheryl Kroyer, John Crane, Stephen Hatcher, Michael Krahe, and Vince D’Aliesio) are denied that opportunity. This practice restricts the public’s access to the information needed to make an informed vote.
The Post Office is on private property thus allowing the property owner to legally make restrictions. However the Post Office is also a government business. In the public interest, the campaign restrictions should be the same for all the candidates at this public meeting place.
I must confess that I am not a resident of Carefree - but I wish I was. I live at The Boulders (year round), but my address is in Scottsdale. However, I identify with Carefree.
I shop in Carefree stores.
I eat in Carefree restaurants.
I regularly attend town events.
I am the “Witch Reader” of children’s stories at the Pumpkin
Festival.
I have, for various reasons, attended Town Council Meetings.
As a result, I am following the town’s elections.
Second, I should disclose that the current mayor, Les Peterson, is a close friend and I support him for re-election. However, this letter is not intended as an endorsement of him.
The purpose of this letter is to promote appropriate, fair and informative election materials for the public.

Lyn, I'm a little late getting this out to you, but thanks for posting Mayor Peterson's explanation and clarification of the situation at the Carefree Postoffice. Downtown Carefree has been marred by the many Farrar posters/photos. The location of his campaign quarters in the post office building is unfortunate. We, too, were wondering why Farrar, and no one else, has an overpowering presence at the post office and now it is clear.
We fully support Mayor Peterson. It is obvious that he loves Carefree and will continue to help this amazingly beautiful town grow.

Lyn, Great reporting as always:)
So, A little “behind the scenes” or “rest of the story” anecdote about Vice Mayor Meyer’s comments about my Dad, Herb Drinkwater, Mayor of Scottsdale from 1980 to 1996. Scottsdale’s longest term Mayor with a 94% approval rating from Citizens:)
As I recall, Dad never wanted the City of Scottsdale to annex Carefree..however..the way it was told to me was that in order to help mobilize the community behind a common goal..that of incorporating Carefree into a town...he allowed folks to THINK that Scottsdale might want to incorporate Carefree into Scottsdale city limits. Brilliant wasn’t it...cuz the threat worked! Carefree incorporated and there we are!
That’s my little story. Keep on doing the good work,
Warmest Regards, Jamie Drinkwater Stockton
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK LYN. WE NEED ALL INFO NOW BEFORE THIS ELECTION.
THANKS TO YOU AND HERBIE.

Another detailed report of the facts from Carefree Truth! Thanks for taking the time to extensively dictate information that is so important to all residents. Thanks Lyn!

Lyn, thank you again for the community service of sharing this information. And of course thanks to our volunteer councilpersons and Mayor for so well shepherding delivery of this crucial resource on our behalf.

Lyn:
Your latest two summaries of the water issue and particularly this one relating Tony’s concerns are excellent. I have sent them on with my comments and support to a few residents to make sure they are aware.
Jeff Kerner
Lyn - Thank you for the detailed reporting of the discussions on the CFW and CCW. Very enlightening.

Lyn:
This was a highly informative article. I learned a huge amount and appreciate the enormous effort Tony and the entire task force has put into this important work.
I got a chuckle when I read "beyond the pail"... whether the pun was intended or not. Beyond the pale is an old Irish idiom. But in this case pail was appropriate!!!!
Stay cool.
Betsy Lynn
Excellent. Who was the Question person? He sure went nutz on Tony.. very odd statements towards the end of the session.

(Lyn's note: All I know is that he was some guy from Cave Creek that Mike Farrar brought to the meeting. It would appear that he spoke for Mike as well as for himself.
And, yes, his statements towards became quite odd. He seemed to think criticisms of the Cave Creek administration were somehow aimed at the Cave Creek citizens, and in particular, at him. Go figure.)
Dearest Lyn,
Thank you for posting our email.
