Some Thoughts on the Recently Concluded Carefree Election
Elections serve multiple purposes, and the candidate for each office receiving the vote from each voter is determined by multiple considerations. Certainly, an election is about determining which candidate the majority of the voters want in that office, but it is also about identifying the issues important to the majority of the voters and the plans to address each.
Since the recent Carefree election has identified the people to lead the town government, those elected should now re-examine and re-think all the issues identified in the campaign to see if Carefree could and should approach each such area in a more productive manner. Rarely is any one candidate 100% right and the other 100% wrong. While elections have a way of polarizing issues, we now need to step back and examine the validity of each identified issue. If there is a better solution available to approach and resolve an issue, we should move the town in that direction.
As I see it, the immediate challenge before us now is twofold. We need to 1) address the important issues identified in the campaigning for this election to see if a better approach is available and, if yes, begin implementing it, and 2) the people from both sides of the election campaigns need to now put aside criticism of the other side and move towards the center, towards working together productively for the good of the town, its residents and its businesses.
Achieving these two challenges in the short term will go a long way towards the Town Council and other contributors being able to maximize their impact for the benefit of all of us. I am prepared to do so, and I would like to invite a similar response from others.
Les Peterson
Carefree Mayor
I would like to thank all of the voters of Carefree for exercising their right to vote for whomever their candidates of choice were. It was a hard fought election (maybe too hard) but everyone has a right to their own opinion of how they would like to see their town run.
Now that the election is over, I call for everyone to ‘bury the hatchet’ and let’s get back to governing our Town for the greater good and healing the rift that divided us all summer.
We have a great community and I am excited to see what we can accomplish by all working together. We have a lot of exciting things happening. The 4th annual Enchanted Pumpkin Garden will be back October 19-28 with a larger footprint to move people through a larger area of the Town. We are in the midst of a new branding program designed to get people into the Town Center and then to better support our Town businesses. This will include new signage, new branding under the umbrella of Keep It Carefree and eventually a loyalty program.
And lastly, thank you to everyone who voted for me personally. I am honored by your trust and I will do my best to be worthy of that trust.

Mayor Peterson,
Congratulations on your win, and how you ran your campaign, and also to most of the council who won. I hope this vote of confidence from the people who live in Carefree is for the things you have accomplished, and hopefully you will continue to have the citizens of Carefree on your mind in the future.
Joe Corpora
Bravo. So glad to hear it. Was hoping all of MF's nonsense and signs didn't have an impact.

So.... I see Les won....yay!! Does this mean that Farrar is no longer part of town government? Guess he should have been part of that term limit lawsuit along with Crane. LOL.
Heidi C.
(Mike Farrar will remain a Councilman until the new Council is seated in January, at which point he will be replaced by Vince D'Aliesio.)
Congratulations to Mayor Les Peterson, to Vice Mayor John Crane, and to the others who were elected to the thankless positions to serve our great little Town.
Word on the street has it that Mikey has yet to call Mayor Peterson and concede. Why am I not surprised?
Heard some good news on Wednesday evening while attending the Neighborhood Meeting on the proposal to re-zone a parcel of land on the northeast corner of Carefree Highway and N Cave Creek Road. It was announced that the developer, after not receiving a "will serve" letter from Cave Creek Water, worked with the Town and the City of Scottsdale to extend a water line from nearby 64th Street to the parcel. This was approved by the City of Scottsdale on August 28, 2018. The arrangement calls for the line to be extended to Cave Creek Road, where it will turn north. Eventually, this line will link with others to allow connection of those Carefree homes on Cave Creek water to receive Carefree water. One step in the right direction to have all Carefree homes and businesses being served by the Carefree Water Company. What is nicer, some of the costs of the new extended line will be paid for by the developer. While I am not sure about how I feel about the site plan for the development, it was great to see the homeowners of Provence asking good questions about how their property values can be maintained and they can maintain and continue the tranquility of the Carefree lifestyle. Both the developer and the homeowners expressed a willingness to meet and discuss plans. The homeowners acted in a very mature, non-emotional manner, while discussing a very important matter. The tentative site plan calls for the addition of a new west traffic lane, along with decelerations turn lanes, on Carefree Highway, which should help traffic except for school busses going east to N 60th street.
The development, if it moves forward, could be an important asset for the Town's sales tax revenues. I think we all enjoy a "no property tax" Town, I know that I do.

I applaud the new ideas by Councilwoman Cheryl Kroyer and CenterPointe Events to incorporate Carefree's businesses into the Pumpkin Festival. This is the time for the Carefree businesses to step up! They have the opportunity to get involved and leverage what the Town has developed and funded over the last 3 years. Come on we need more businesses to get involved and take advantage of the large crowds and world wide media exposure!!! KEEP IT CAREFREE!
Gina Kaegi
WOW!!! I am soo looking forward to this year’s festival.

Hi Lyn,
I think we should correct the record in reference to the purchase of the water company. L Meyer was not on the council when the purchase of the water company took place. H Stevens was mayor. I was on the council and played a very small part. I explained what a private revenue ruling was to the council. The sellers of the water company wanted the interest paid by the town, tax free. This had to be approved by the IRS.
L Meyer and myself were part of the water company committee when he was on the council. At one point a meeting took place with Jay George in reference to the purchase of Cave Creek Water company when I was on the council. The terms we passed on to Cave Creek was that Carefree would own .51 per cent and CC .49 per cent. They rejected the offer. Purchase price around five million. Later on they paid about 20 million. Jon Pearson could be your reference or check with the town for the facts.
Thanks for what you do for the town. I just want to set the record straight.
Greg Gardner
Hi Lyn,
Thanks for sharing Greg’s comments. Yes, he is correct. It was a great pleasure to serve with him on the Council and Water Committee as he had a very strong financial background, which was of particular benefit to our Town in so many areas, and I am not surprised he would want to correct anything he may have heard which he thought was inaccurate. Carefree’s purchase of the private water company in Carefree was completed during Mayor Stevens’ tenure about 20 years ago, before I joined the Council, and was a critical first step in developing our own water system. The hope was that Cave Creek would also purchase their water company at that time, so we could work together and take a regional approach to the water and sewage issues which didn’t happen, so we had to go it alone.
Carefree has been truly blessed over the years to have had exceptional mayors and council people willing to serve our community. Ed Morgan, who followed as Mayor, was one of the most capable leaders I have ever worked with, particularly in dealing with the water issues. Wayne Fulcher, who followed Ed as Mayor, the same, David Schwan, and the many council people, like Greg, and town staff that worked together to create the excellent water system we have. I am very proud to have been a part of that team and look forward to working with our current Mayor and Council to now complete that plan and add the additional Carefree homes currently being served by Cave Creek to the Carefree system.
