Dear Lyn,
As per the most recent “Unofficial Combined Results” of the Primary Election issued by Maricopa County, we believe that “unofficially” all six of the individuals running for the six Carefree Town Council positions, as well as myself for the position of Mayor, have been elected.
Based on the calculations provided by State statute, the necessary vote count is (unofficially) 342 votes necessary (50% of the votes cast for the position, plus 1 additional vote) for a Carefree Council Member to be seated. All the candidates running for council exceeded that number by a wide margin, as shown below.
Votes Received
John Crane 706
Mike Farrar 666
Michael Krahe 657
Cheryl Kroyer 703
Gene Orrico 664
Jim Van Allen 674
For Mayor, I received 824 votes, which was 98.8% of the votes cast for that petition, and was “Unofficially” elected to continue on as the Carefree Mayor.
I fully support each of the individuals elected to the Carefree Town Council and believe that they will continue to provide outstanding service to the Town of Carefree and its residents as did the currently seated Town Council. My deepest “Thank You” to all Carefree residents participating in this Primary Election. I look forward to the start of the new term in December with the new Town Council and working together with Carefree’s residents and businesses to continue the work of the Town.
Kandace French, the Carefree Town Clerk, is anticipating receiving the “Official” results on Tuesday, September 6th. We have scheduled a Special Meeting of the Town Council for Tuesday afternoon, September 13th to Canvass the vote, which essentially is to receive the final count provided by Maricopa County, have it reviewed and certified by the Town Clerk and then accepted by the Town Council.
Best regards,
Mayor Les Peterson
Stan, the man who sits on the bench in front of the Carefree Post Office and chats with people going in and out, will be turning 99. A birthday celebration, organized by his caregiver Norm and Norm's wife Ann, is set for Monday Sept 12. at the P.O. at 10 am. Stan knows and will participate. Mayor Peterson will give a tribute speech. There will be donuts and water. Everyone is welcome to join the fun and to wish Stan a happy birthday!
Lyn, that was very kind of you & Herbie, to do the video of Bill Rintlemann’s memorial service for Sandy. As you know, because you attended every meeting, I worked closely with Bill on the Planning & Zoning Commission for nearly three years, prior to going on the Town Council. We walked many acres together in Carefree in carrying out those responsibilities, and became very good friends. After retiring from an exceptionally brilliant and incredible career, he came to Carefree and really poured his heart and soul into our community. He was truly one of the finest individuals I have ever known.
Bill was fond of telling the story that everyone who sat to his left on P&Z went on to serve on our Town Council, and he would make that prediction to each new Commissioner as soon as they were seated next to him. The part he didn’t tell was that he was a tremendous mentor, and his knowledge, educational skills, and inspiration, provided much of the motivation for the new Commissioners to gain the knowledge, experience and confidence necessary to serve on the Council. That was certainly true for me, David Schwan, and the many others who were fortunate enough to be seated next to Bill. Very few people really knew the tremendous contributions he made to our community in so many areas, and he will be greatly missed. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness.
Lloyd Meyer
(Lyn's note: Herbert did a short video with still shots he took prior to the start of the service. Sandy was very pleased with it and gave us permission to share it. I sent it out to many of Bill's friends and was planning to stop at that, but I felt Lloyd's tribute also needed to be shared. Here is the video to which he referred. https://vimeo.com/181412667)
Lyn, VETSBuilt Contracting has been hired to renovate a dog shelter, but not just any dog shelter!!!
We've been hired to turn a flea-bag infested dog shelter into the Ritz Carlton of dog shelters... There is a realty TV show called "SAVE OUR SHELTERS". CW TV airs it on Saturday mornings. GO TO: http://saveourshelter.com/
They travel all over the US and Canada to help renovate shelters and turn them into happy and clean places for people to come adopt a dog! They ONLY travel to shelters that DO NOT euthanize dogs! They are basically the DYI or HOME IMPROVEMENT of dog shelters.
The producer is Former Navy and one of the top guys, Rob North, is a Former Marine (see bios below)... They LOVE the idea VETSBuilt is veteran-owned and hiring vets! So we'll be filmed rebuilding the kennel Saturday - Monday. We have a Marine going tomorrow and epoxying the floor, and Saturday I will go with Chris, and Former Marine Craig, Former Navy and Air Force w my brother/partner DJ to build-out the job. We have all military involved in the job (with the exception of painting...).
What grabbed me today was someone made a comment, not a sales pitch that went like this: "...no one works here for the money... they work here because it's a labor of love and they save dogs and build families. The name of the shelter is "OHANA": "Part of Hawaiian culture, ʻohana means family (in an extended sense of the term, including blood-related, adoptive or intentional). The concept emphasizes that families are bound together and members must cooperate and remember one another."
These are really good people doing really good things!
So after we finish the renovation, can you help us get people down to adopt a dog by publishing a lil something-something...? Once the kennel fills up, they don't euthanize; they just have to turn the dogs away, so the more dogs they get adopted, the better... VETSBuilt is going to make it a nice clean comfortable place to visit and help make it better and easier to adopt a dog! The shelter is located at 301 S McClintock Dr, Tempe, AZ 85281. Phone: (480) 744-5729, Hours: Open today : 11AM–5PM

(Lyn's note: Ray and Sue's sand sculpture of the elephant playing chess with the mouse in the Carefree Gardens amphitheater was demolished on Tuesday morning and the sand was saved to be used in the next sculpture. I thought you might all enjoy seeing Herbert's photos as it was being built. It was an amazing project. We are looking forward to the next sand sculpture and to the Pumpkin Festival, which starts October 17th. (Lyn's note: I had gotten a number of emails, both from within and without Sentinel Rock, asking about the helicopter circling over our neighborhoods with a search light shining down on Thursday night, September 2nd, around 2 AM. We slept through it so I had no clue.
I called the MSCO number and was transferred to the dispatcher. She looked it up and said the helicopter had been out looking for a missing person and was on its way back to the hanger when MCSO got a call from a woman in Entrada who thought she saw someone moving around on her porch. Since the helicopter was in the area, they sent it over to have a look. The pilots flew around a bit but didn't see anything. The dispatcher said it could even have been a large animal, or if it was a person, they were obviously scared off.
MCSO was happy to come and look. They continue to encourage people to dial 911 if they are concerned about anything they think is unusual or potentially dangerous.
Below are responses from neighbors to whom I sent the above info on Friday morning. My HOA list includes representatives in other HOAs in the area, so they were able to let their residents know too.)
I heard that last night. Assumed it was dispatched for a silver alert.
Larry
(Lyn's note: Correct. The helicopter was originally dispatched for a Silver Alert. They found the lady and were heading home when the call came in from Entrada, so they made a slight detour to address it.)
I think that's SO cool! Nice to have that kind of "all in" from our Sheriff's dept.! They are forgiven for waking us up.
Jakki
Thank you. I was terrified last night. I am a light sleeper so I couldn't sleep for a while because the helicopter was going on for a while. Thank you for sharing.
Yani
I heard it and got up and looked, figured it was an accident down at the corner or looking for someone.
Tom
Thanks. Guess I'm not the only night owl in the 'hood.
Kathy
Thanks for the info.
Pam
It wasn't our usual coyote chorus off the back patio! Thanks for your update! I hope they located whoever was missing....

Lyn:
Let me join in the conversation about drought tolerant plants. I get a little tired of agave, barrel cacti, fishhook, golden barrels, and ocotillo and wonder why people overlook the jojoba.
Much to my surprise, I have found jojoba to be very drought-tolerant. I put one in my side yard where I didn't have any irrigation. There is a vacant lot next to mine that has a couple, no irrigation, and they are doing OK. Yes, they look a little tired, but stay green and, best of all, they are not an overly messy bush.
It is a bush with green leaves that seems to survive on neglect. It grows slowly and retains its shape with little to no trimming. Yes, it may drop a small leaf or two, but it is a nice change from stickers and spikes.

Yes, I have received about 4 calls from the so-called IRS also and my son did about 6 months ago.
