(Lyn's note: And now, after seeing all the cute critters in Herbert's photos, here's an article about why poison is a bad way to get rid of pack rats. Although, in fairness, the article failed to mention First Kill, which is a poison that only kills the animal that originally ingests it. According to Nick, the owner of Diamondback Pest Control, a coyote would have to eat 1800 pack rats to be killed by First Kill. But, still, I suspect something like a bird could be affected more easily, and there is no guarantee that the original ingester would be the intended pack rat. When we had pack rats in our no longer used gate at the bottom of our driveway, we used live traps and released them far out in the desert, which was admittedly less built up at the time.)

Dear Lyn,
First of all, I would like to thank you and Herbie for all you have done and continue to do for Carefree. All of us appreciate both of your fine efforts for many years now for the Town of Carefree.
For the upcoming Christmas Parade in Carefree, we have changed the timing for the Parade from what was the evening to 10:00 in the morning on December 9th. We have received a number of inquiries regarding the basis of this change. Below is a release we are in the process of releasing to local newspapers addressing our reasons for this change. The bottom line is that Carefree had enormous safety concerns over continuing a nighttime parade without adequate lighted parking for all parade participants and spectators, which dictated to us the necessity to move the Christmas parade so that it would be implemented during daylight hours.
If you or any other Carefree resident would like to discuss the safety issues caused by a nighttime parade issue further, I would be happy to do so.

Carefree’s reasons for changing to a daytime Annual Carefree Christmas Parade
Carefree has received a number of questions inquiring about the reasons why the annual Christmas Parade was changed from a nighttime parade to a daytime parade. Be assured that this was a very considered decision, and was made only after substantial discussions with the Carefree/Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce, with whom Carefree partners sponsoring this parade, many local merchants and the police and others who manage traffic before and after the parade.
There were a number of factors supporting this change. On the positive side, most major parades take place during daylight hours - like the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade and the Rose Bowl Parade, to name a few. Most parades in small town America also take place during the mid-day hours.
But, besides the popularity of daylight parades, there were also other pertinent factors that played into this decision to change the timing for the Christmas parade. These included:
- The decreased participation of lighted floats in Carefree’s Christmas parade in recent years. From a peak of 19 lighted floats in the Christmas Parade in 2012, these had decreased to 6 in 2016. It is expensive and time consuming to construct a meaningful lighted float.
- Another reason was that for a nighttime parade, parade spectators had to arrive early to secure prime viewing locations, but in so doing they blocked access to our merchants for an entire Saturday afternoon.
But the most compelling, and controlling, aspect of our discussions and ultimate decision was doing our best to enhance the safety of the many people viewing the parade - and returning to their cars in darkness after the parade. Due to the overwhelming popularity of the Carefree Christmas Parade, there have been significantly more cars bringing people viewing the Parade than could reasonably be accommodated in downtown Carefree parking spaces. This necessitated cars being parked on residential and commercial streets, sometimes as far a one mile away from the Parade.
Returning to cars in darkness after a nighttime parade is more dangerous than returning during daylight hours. Visibility on dark, unlighted streets is significantly less than during daylight hours. In recent years, the police would tell us about near accidents, such as after last year’s Parade that of a car skidding to a stop within a few feet of a young family pushing a stroller as they returned to their car. The Town of Carefree just couldn’t, in good conscience, continue a practice that brought on this higher level of risk to Parade spectators caused by the darkness.
Carefree definitely wanted to keep the Christmas Parade, but we wanted to make it as safe as possible. This was the primary reason the Town moved the Parade to 10:00 on the morning of the 2nd Saturday of December, the traditional date for the Carefree Christmas Parade. Our discussions with many other near-by towns supported the decision to move the Carefree Christmas Parade to a daytime execution. Other towns who have moved to daytime parades are experiencing greater participation of floats and spectators than their previous nighttime parades. The initial response to participation in Carefree’s daytime Parade parallels the other towns. We are receiving greater levels of interest in participation in the Carefree Christmas Parade during daylight hours than we have seen In many years.
We are looking forward to building upon the Carefree Christmas tradition which has been built during the last decade. Join us for a season long celebration of the Christmas Season running from December 1st to December 23rd, and mark your calendar for the Carefree Christmas Parade.at 10:00 on Saturday morning, December 9th.

Lyn, you and others have known me for many years, I have built over 34 custom homes in carefree since 1996, and now the saving of Black Mountain Coffee & Cafe at Spanish Village, Carefree's Oldest Resturant for the last two years. As I sit here at Easystreet and Hum Rd. taking a break, I see a deserted town with only a couple of stores open and nothing going on at the Pavilions Stage? And it's Memorial Day here in Carefree, think to my self another holiday here in Carefree has gone unrecognized by our town, where's the special event that should be happening on our expensive stage my taxed Bussiness dollars helped pay for. There should have been recognition and a Salute to all those who gave there lives for America's freedom today, as a long time carefree resident and Bussiness owner I am becoming more and more disappointed on how the town is becoming disconnected from lost revenue that supports all the residents free fire dept, police protection, street maintenance and so on. I walk around the gardens I asked for the info board to promote local restaurants and businesses and what do I see 1 area map on one board, and posters of Ray Villafane on all the others, Well Rays on Vacation and I'm still here like all the other brick and mortars that support the town on a Daily basis! I think town staff needs to do better in supporting All Holiday events! not just there own created events!
A concerned Bussiness Owner!
