"Thomas Jefferson said a democracy is dependent on an informed citizenry. I don't care whether it sounds corny or not. It's the truth." -Jim Lehrer

Mayor Les Peterson reported that a request had been made to close Elbow Bend Road from Sidewinder Road to Nonchalant Avenue, allowing for business access, from May 9th to May 27th, to install final paving and sidewalk improvements adjacent to The View condominiums. He turned the presentation over to Town Engineer Mark Milstone, but unfortunately, the microphone at the podium had developed issues, and the speakers at the podium could not be understood. The Council voted unanimously to approve the street closure.

Mayor Peterson introduced the Flood Control District Allotment for the design and construction of the E. Carefree Drive and E. Cave Creek Road drainage project. Again, Mr. Milstone made the presentation, which could not be understood due to the podium microphone problems.
Gary Neiss clarified that this project would fall under the next fiscal year (FY), so all the Council was doing that night was executing the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA). The funds won't be received until the next FY, and will be part of the Capital Plan for the next FY, as shown in the 5 year plan. The budget will marry the funding with what's in the IGA. The motion to accept the IGA was approved unanimously.

The Mayor welcomed "Commander Dan", the head of the American Legion Post #34 in Cave Creek. Post #34 is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Mayor Peterson said he and his wife Mary attended the recent WWll USO type show at the Post, and it was outstanding, reminiscent of the types of shows put on for the troops by performers like Bob Hope. "It was very memorable and very well done. Thank you, sir."
Vice Mayor John Crane noted that Post #34 tends to fly under the radar, and many don't know what they do for the community. They help with the Carefree Memorial Day ceremony and they made a nice contribution to the Veterans Memorial Monument in the Carefree Gardens. They take care of the 41 graves of the veterans interred in Carefree's Pioneer Cemetery. They make donations to many of the local non profit organizations. These men and women served when they were young, and they continue to serve in a different manner now. "They are a good organization."
