Garden Insects: Friends and Foes

In the United States alone, there are approximately 91,000 described living species of insects. For gardeners, there are many days you may think most of them have taken over your space! But, currently, we have lost 40% of the world’s population. Insects are our benefactors, providing us with food, clothing, and dyes. Some are cleaners and recyclers of the earth. Many, however, are destructive.
On Saturday, February 8, Carefree Desert Gardens welcomes back popular gardening educator Carol Stuttard. Join Carol as she discusses the vital role insects play in our local ecology. She will introduce us to the wonderful and fascinating world of insects and help us discover who are our gardens allies and enemies.
Carol brought her love of gardening with her when she was transplanted from England to Phoenix. She was certified as a Master Gardener in 2001. She has completed numerous Advanced Training courses. In 2006 Carol was certified as a Desert Landscape designer through Desert Botanical Gardens and is a horticultural instructor there. She is an adjunct professor in the Horticulture Department at Mesa Community College. Carol has been on PBS and had her own show on Channel 11, Scottsdale for Vegetable Gardening. Carol has a desert gardening blog at: https://frommygardentoyou.blogspot.com
The program, usually including a plant raffle, will begin at 9:30 a.m. and run approximately until noon at the Town Council Chambers located at 33 Easy Street and Nonchalant Avenue, Carefree. A $5.00 - or more - donation is appreciated to support these programs. For information call 480-488-3686.

Vice Mayor John Crane explained that there is an effort within the community to create a Veterans Memorial monument in Carefree. Army veteran Mike Ferrell, who lives in Carefree Sentinel Rock, came to the Town wishing to lead this effort. He pulled together some fellow veterans to form a committee of 5, 1 from each branch of the service, 4 of whom live in Carefree and 1 who lives in Cave Creek. The Town of Carefree is participating by providing a small piece of land in the Gardens, near the gila monster slide. It will be screened by vegetation.
The concept design is nearly finished and the rendering drawings will be shared with the community and the Town, after which donations will be solicited. Press releases and a website will be coming coming soon. The dedication target date is this Memorial Day, May 25th. If anyone has questions, they can contact Vice Mayor Crane and he will direct them to those managing the project.

During Call to the Public, Lisa Bella said that parking at the Post Office during events is a serious issue for those who use the PO on a daily basis.

People not only pick up mail, but sometimes packages as well. She had to haul a package to her car parked near Bashas' the previous week. Ms. Bella noted that Thunderbird Artists hires people to steer event visitors away from PO parking, and she recommends that the Town do the same whenever there is an event held in Carefree. She noted that the problem will only worsen with the construction of the Hampton Inn and the townhomes.
She also expressed concern that the stripping in the PO parking lot is faded and almost invisible, creating confusion for those parking. Mayor Les Peterson explained that the parking lot is on private property over which the Town has no jurisdiction. He added that they would consider her recommendation for staffing the PO parking lot entrance during Town events.

He spent 15 years of his 40 year career serving the Carefree/Cave Creek area, working closely with then Town Administrator Jon Pearson. He remembers when the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) substation was located on Sundial Circle. Mr. Sheridan served District 4 as first a deputy, then a Corporal, a Sergeant, a Lieutenant, and ultimately as Captain for 4 years. When covering District 4 as a Lieutenant and as Captain, he attended all the Council meetings, which he feels is very important.
He was visiting all the MCSO contract towns to introduce himself and ask for the support of the voters. If elected, he vowed to "make sure you get the service you pay for". Mayor Peterson thanked him for his past service to the town and wished him well.
