An amendment to the Special Use Permit for the Carefree Farmers Market to include the Friday morning street closure of Ho Hum Rd. behind the Pavilion was considered. Gary Neiss called this "another example of adapting to the new norm".
Economic Development Director Steve Prokopek reported that the Farmers Market was struggling for critical mass. It had moved from the sundial to the Pavilion for the summer. Ho Hum Rd. is an underutilized space which bisects the Gardens area. This would allow a portion of the Farmers Market to expand to the other side of the Gardens and would allow the Town to look at how spaces can be fused together for other events in the future. It opens up the Gardens and allows for a lot more consolidation of activities. He talked to some of the businesses along Easy Street. They didn't register concern, especially since the Farmers Market takes place mostly in the morning, and it can bring pedestrian traffic into the area.
The Town would look at traffic flow into 100 Easy Street, and could perhaps place a sandwich board sign at the Farmers Market to showcase the businesses in the 100 Easy Street building to let those visiting the Farmers Market know there are other businesses in that building to visit while here. The Town would monitor the street closure, which would begin immediately and continue until December 18th, to see how it works. If successful, the Council could approve it for a longer period of time.
The street closure was approved 6-0.
