Hi Lyn,
I want to thank you for the great support you have shown in the past for our veteran healing workshops at Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center.
I wanted to let you know that due to the Covid pandemic we have not been able to conduct our weekend in person Healing of Memories Workshops, but we have created a Healing of Memories Zoom Workshop for Women Veterans that will be conducted on Saturday, September 26 from 9am to 1pm. As with all of our veteran workshops, this one is free. I am providing a description of the workshop below and also have attached a poster.
Please help me get the word out.
Thank you.

Healing of Memories Zoom Workshop for Women Veterans
The Institute for Healing of Memories, in partnership with Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center, is pleased to announce the Healing of Memories Zoom Workshop for Women Veterans. Due to COVID19 the Institute for Healing of Memories is not able to conduct our normal weekend in person workshops for veterans. In order to continue to serve veterans in need of psychological and spiritual healing we have created a 4-hour online Zoom Healing of Memories Workshop based on our highly successful weekend workshop. The Zoom workshop does not provide the full experience of the weekend workshop, but does provide a significant level of healing and connection for the participants.
The workshop will be conducted on-line on Saturday, September 26 from 9am to 1pm Arizona time. There is no cost for any woman service member or veteran. Those interested in the workshop may find out more information or register free for the workshop by contacting Mike Wold, US Navy veteran and workshop coordinator, at 651-687-9767. Space is limited to the first 15 women veterans who register.
The Institute for Healing of Memories is an international organization that seeks to contribute to lasting individual and collective healing that makes possible a more peaceful and just future. Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center, located in a beautiful and peaceful Arizona desert setting, hosts programs and retreats for participants of all faiths and traditions to experience reconciliation, renewal, healing, and transformation.

Lyn,
It would be great if the marketing budget could be better detailed . For example what is the SG&A, and how much of the 656K actually goes to marketing, i.e. ads, flyers, banners, advertisement. Assuming a marketing salary of 60-75, (not a-typical for a town the size of Carefree), plus additional adm. expense of 8-12 %, (adds up to approximately 84K), we are left with approximately 572K for marketing. If most of the expenditures were associated with the Pumpkin Festival and there were offsets to the tune of 413K, then what is the ROI? Does it approximate 1:1 or is it less? A return on investment of approximately 1:1 begs the question of whether those expenditures are worth it unless one is able to measure the collateral benefit to surrounding businesses. If that is the case, I would encourage the town to assign the marketing department to quantify that collateral benefit and present such to the Carefree residents during the next budget cycle.

Hi Lyn, Thank you for forwarding John’s questions.
Hi John, I hope you and the family are doing well and navigating these uncertain times.
The Council held numerous public meetings during the budget process outlining all costs associated with the old marketing budget. The old marketing budget did outline the respective costs for advertisements, event production and salaries. To clarify what was discussed at this recent Council meeting was a balance sheet covering the previous fiscal year. Council member Orrico requested clarification to the previous fiscal year marketing expenses and I clarified these expenses also had to be reconciled with the corresponding revenue line. This was not a discussion of the specific festival expenses as that was done after the conclusion of the festival in December when the known final costs and revenues had been reconciled.
As far as metrics on the return on investment we are all in agreement. This is why the Council last winter made the strategic move to focus on business retention and attraction activities rather than event marketing. The Town’s current fiscal year budget illustrates this change in strategy.
I hope that helps to address your questions.
Best regards,
Gary Neiss
Thanks Gary,
Hope you are enjoying labor day weekend. I am happy to hear that the marketing focus is shifting from events planning to business development and retention. Better use of resources.
Have a great weekend.
