During Current Events, Mayor Les Peterson read a letter given to him by Mike Wold, the Regional Coordinator, Arizona, for the Institute of Healing of Memories, North America. The free of cost local workshops to help veterans with physical or emotional issues are held in downtown Carefree at the Spirit in the Desert Retreat.Mayor Les,
It is with great sadness that I report the passing of my good friend Richard Andersen, Director of Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center in Carefree, Arizona. He passed away on Sunday, June 2 surrounded by his family, pastor and close friends. He lived an extraordinary life of service to others and will be sorely missed by anyone who had the honor to know him. Please pray for the repose of his soul and for peace to his family and friends.
Thank you
Mike
(Lyn, Richard Andersen, Executive Director at Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center, died last Sunday. His memorial service will be at Ascension Lutheran Church at 3 PM on Friday June 21. Please help spread the word.
Thanks,
Paul Campbell
Spirit in the Desert Executive Director Emeritus and current Pastor at Ascension.)
Mayor Peterson said he would be missed. Councilman Gene Orrico noted that the Pastor was a Kiwanian. He collapsed at the YMCA while teaching a class on riding bicycles, was in a coma, and was taken off of life support.

During Call to the Public, Councilman Vince D'Aliesio said he had been contacted by an acquaintance at Maricopa County Public Health. The Program Administrator asked him to make people aware of the annual County-wide survey currently underway to determine the needs of the community. It is also broken down into municipalities to determine the specific types of services needed in each. Carefree has been extremely under represented, and might not get some of the funding for which it could be eligible when the County is making its budget. Information from the survey could also help the Town address needs down the road. The survey is anonymous, other than asking for your zip code. It takes less than 3 minutes to complete. Mr. D'Aliesio requested that it be put on the Town of Carefree website and left up for the month. You can find the survey here: https://maricopasneb.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_esPgjkUFv1i7DFz
(The survey link was also included in Carefree Truth Letters from Readers on May 29th. Herbert and I both took it. It's fast and easy.)
Mayor Peterson added that the Foothills Community Foundation (FCF) also does research in concert with ASU to ascertain unfulfilled needs. They have helped to launch many local non profit organizations such as the Food Bank, Caring Corps, and the Desert Foothills Theater. He felt it would be worthwhile for the County to coordinate with the FCF.

I presented the Town with a 3' x 2' photo, backed with foam, of fireworks from the 2018 Christmas Festival that was taken by my husband Herbert. It was printed by the Carefree UPS Store in the Bashas' center, which does wonderful printing. 2018 was the last year for our traditional Christmas fireworks, since the vacant parcel from which they were shot off will be undergoing construction soon.

Robert Jacobson noted that in 2016 he had brought trees in the medians on Cave Creek Road to the Town's attention. He wished to do so again now that the roads are in the budget. He said the trees are still growing, are too big, and are dangerous. Mayor Peterson said Gary Neiss would look at them again.
Next, Mr. Jacobson asked if Carefree was considering getting its own police department. Mayor Peterson said it was discussed in the past, and they talked to other towns that had police departments. It is phenomenally expensive and is not in the plans.
