Globe chamomile is the most highly flammable plant that can be found in our yards. When Maricopa County and Rural/Metro gave their emergency preparedness presentation last spring, R/M Fire Chief John Kraetz said each of those pretty tiny yellow flowers, when dried out after blooming, are like 1000 match heads if there is a wildfire. He noted that February is the time to start weeding in order to get ahead of these plants. Lee Ackmann provided a link about this plant, and my husband got a picture yesterday of what he suspected is the early stage of globe chamomile. Lee confirmed that this was correct. I'm sending out Lee's link and Herbert's photo so you can all be educated about this plant.

I would also remind everyone that R/M strongly suggests creating at least a 30' fire break around your house that is cleared of vegetation. Healthy green looking plants will quickly dry out from the heat if a fire is approaching and will turn into tinder. Be sure to trim back tree branches that hang over or close to your roof as well. Last year was a very active fire season that included numerous large and small fires in our immediate area, and this winter we've had a lot of rain, so it will probably be another bad fire season once all the nice green stuff we are seeing now dries out and becomes brown.
Thanks, and have a safe and happy 2020!

Maybe you can drop a word to powers that be about traffic tickets. Many of our residents get tickets for 3-5 miles over posted limits. Seems that warnings given in lieu of tickets for low speed violations and California stops would be of equal effect rather than a 200-300 dollar ticket which also effects insurance premiums. Of course unless the patrol has a roll of revenuer as well. The entire road map of Carefree needs a new look for proper speed limits. Seems the town is set up as a giant speed trap! You can publish and use this as needed. Your credentials carry more weight than mine. I am sure there is similar sympathy among residents. Thanks Lyn.

Lyn,
If it came to a vote I would definitely vote against photo radar as in my opinion this would be another reason not to visit Carefree.
I had a friend, recently deceased, who must have received a photo radar ticket a month which she promptly shredded each time. She never opened the door for anyone holding a piece of paper.
I am more concerned about that mess being built on Carefree Hwy just west of CC Road. Welcome to Bell Road north!
Tom Surrency
(Lyn's note: The land on Carefree Hwy. west of Cave Creek Rd. belongs to Phoenix and Cave Creek, so is out of Carefree's control.)
I have no issue with photo radar. In an recent Wall Street Journal article, they reported that photo radar with a clear image of the car as well as driver result in a 99% "citation is paid" rate. However, it wasn't clear if an overwhelming percentage of those who acknowledged the citation and/or paid the fine were residents or visitors. My way of thinking is residents will always acknowledge or pay the fine because they don't want to get pulled over one day on their way to dinner or come out of a store and find their car booted. Even visitors from out of town who have rented a car usually will pay because the car company has their credit card and may have the ability to charge the fine to the card. I don't know.... it would be very valuable for the Town to speak to enforcement officials who have experience with photo radar to get the full scope of the pros and cons before going this route and investing in expensive photo radar equipment.

Today was an incredible day in our house. Cheryl and I sat down with the man who built our house, who basically built the Town of Carefree: Gerry Jones and his wonderful wife Leslie. He kept referring to our house as house number #1 and the DeMille house. The DeMille family owned the first house in Carefree, which is our house. The DiMille’s owned some stores in Scottsdale called Dos Cabezas back in the 50s and 60s. He talked about the development of the town, the annexation of the South end of Boulders resort and how the south half now belongs to the city of Scottsdale and the north half is in Carefree town limits, and how he was against the annexation of the resort, and got in an argument with Scottsdale Mayor Herb Drinkwater and real estate developer Russ Lyon about it. It was an incredible conversation sitting with this gentleman who is well into his 90s. He has built over 300 houses in his lifetime between Oregon, Paradise Valley, and the town of Carefree, and he's lived on Black Mountain for 50 years. It is the 60th anniversary of the beginnings of what is now Carefree, Arizona, and they are doing a home tour in honor of this man into six of the homes that he holds nearest and dearest in his heart that he built in this community. Proceeds from the home tour go to the Cave Creek Museum-- And guess what house is also on that home tour? 👍👍 House #1. We wouldn't be living in this amazing community and would not be serving this amazing Community, if not for this man. Thank you, Gerry Jones!! https://apeekatthepeak.org/museums-home-tour-celebrates-jerry-jones-legacy-march-8th/

Having traveled from Phoenix to Carefree since the 60's, when the only thing north of Bell was Tom Chaunceys Arabian Horses, it's now an hour's drive, longer if you don't live in central Phoenix.
Since my family has been here since 1882, getting out for a drive in the "boondocks"was a short drive. Stay-cations are now a must not to have to drive in the dark all the way home or if you had wine at dinner.
Carefree has never been a stay-cation town. You visit for a couple of hours and leave. Not in the best interests of your shops. Having been an owner of a gallery, managing different shops and selling, the longer you have to make a profit on your walk-in's, the better. Repeat business is a must for survival.
Carefree is getting a Hampton Inn. If you are a Hilton Honors member you know what this means. Finally Carefree will have revenue spending the night. Advertised in Hilton's directory and if they give AAA discounts even bigger commercial net to throw.
I was sorry to hear that there will not be any more pumpkin festivals, $15.00 was nothing, just spent $25.00 on two movie tickets at Harkins Scottsdale Square.
Give people a reason to come and stay.
