"Thomas Jefferson said a democracy is dependent on an informed citizenry. I don't care whether it sounds corny or not. It's the truth." -Jim Lehrer

On Memorial Day, our country remembers those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of our nation. This year, the challenges of the on-going pandemic caused the Town to modify its traditional morning of remembrance and honor at the Carefree-Cave Creek Cemetery.
Guests were encouraged to walk the grounds, reflect, and pay respect to our veterans. But this year there was no formal program. From 7:30 AM until 9 AM face masks, gloves and hand sanitizer were available near the entry gate, courtesy of American Legion Post #34 in Cave Creek. As in years past, the Tribute Riders marked the graves of the 41 veterans interred in the Cemetery with the American flag. "Taps" was played by John Edward Williamson at 8 AM.
After the playing of "Taps", Vice Mayor John Crane thanked everyone for coming and encouraged them to walk around to pay their respects at the graves. He advised everyone to read the stirring message contained in the program, written by the scheduled keynote speaker Nurse Winnie Fritz, Captain, US Army, Vietnam Veteran. You can find this message in Herbert's video below. Click on the picture to play the video.

The Town of Carefree extends sincere appreciation and thanks to the American Legion Riders-Post #34, the Tribute Riders Club of Scottsdale, Wanona (Winnie) Fritz, John Edward Williamson, and Vice Mayor John Crane.
Many of the scheduled participants in the formal program which did not take place today will instead participate in the dedication ceremony later this summer for the Veterans Memorial within the Carefree Desert Gardens that is being created and developed by a group of area veterans. More information can be found at www.attveterans.org/carefree/ along with how to donate to the Veterans Memorial fund.
