Issue #855, September 5, 2020
(Lyn's note: Carefree gets $2900 for each household that completes the 2020 Census. We do not have a local municipal property tax; the taxes we pay are to Maricopa County and the Cave Creek Unified School District. We are totally dependent on local sales tax revenue and State Shared Revenue to pay for the services we enjoy, like fire and police protection. It is vital that we complete the census to receive that $2900 per household from the State. If you lived in Scottsdale or Phoenix, you would pay an additional $3000 a year in local property tax on the average priced house. Many homes in Carefree are above the "average" price house. We all want to keep that tax at bay and keep that money in our own pockets, so please fill out the census if you have not done so already. You don't have to be a full time resident; you can report here if you resided in Carefree as of April 1st. The deadline for reporting is September 30th. The census can be completed online by clicking on 2020CENSUS.GOV
Please also keep in mind that the number of representatives each state gets in the House of Representatives in Congress is dependent on that state's population as reported in the census. The census is important on so many levels.
Below are the 3 videos that were noted in the Council meeting. These 2 videos show why it's important to complete the census, and are fun to watch.

During Current Events at the August Council meeting, Mayor Les Peterson, when talking about the 2020 Census, noted, "Cheryl Kroyer, John Crane and Vince D'Aliesio have been doing some excellent work". Councilman D'Aliesio reported that they had put together a few videos to spread awareness and do some outreach to get a better reporting on the census. There are 2 fun videos and one instructional one that shows how easy it is to fill out the form online. Councilwoman Kroyer said the videos are great, and they got them out all over the place. She thanked Herbert for shooting them. She added that John Crane generated a wonderful mailer card.
The Town will set up a table inside the Post Office building from Tuesday, September 8th through Monday, September 14th, with volunteers to answer questions for 3 hours each of those days.
Vice Mayor Crane reported that Maricopa County was at about a 65% response rate; Carefree's response rate was only at 42%. "We're really far down." The Enumerators who are going door-to-door help, but we have a long way to go. Participating in the census is of great value to the town in terms of bringing in revenue. Mr. D'Aliesio noted that Carefree's participation has increased significantly in recent weeks, and he thanked those who had participated.
Mayor Peterson also thanked those residents. As of the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) meeting he attended 2 weeks prior, Carefree had the lowest participation of all the towns and cities in the County, including large municipalities with residents who don't want to register. Carefree has historically been among the lowest. The census provides $2900 per household that had residents in it as of April 1st. The deadline for completing the census is September 30th.
Councilman Stephen Hatcher wondered if a significant percentage of the people were gone for the summer, and how they can be contacted. Ms. Kroyer replied that Carefree Truth was sending out the info often, it's been in COINS, and the Town has sent mailer cards to the Carefree PO boxes. Mr. D'Aliesio added that one doesn't have to be a full time resident; they could report here if they resided in Carefree as of April 1st. He guessed that some did not leave town this summer due to Covid.
Gary Neiss said there has been a T sign in the Carefree Post Office building since March about completing the census online. The Census has sent 2 postcards to the mailboxes. Information has been included in numerous COINS. He hoped with this last push, they could get Carefree up to the average of the metropolitan area.
The Mayor noted that direct mail, videos on social media, a table set up at the Post Office, and enumerators going door-to-door, are all methods being employed. "Please encourage anyone you see to fill it out. It's dollars and cents to the State, and then it trickles down to us as well." Mr. Hatcher asked what the final average is normally for participation. Vice Mayor Crane guessed it is typically 75-80%. At the time of the meeting, there were 30 days to go, and there is a full court press going on around the state. Mayor Peterson stated that Carefree is still low. It is a simple survey, not privacy intrusive. The Town will continue to give it their best shot.
