Carefree – A COVID Safe and Friendly Environment
During these hot days of August when COVID compliance continues to limit our activities, it is refreshing to find a COVID safe and friendly environment in the Carefree town center involving activities that are enjoyable and healthy.
Carefree’s Desert Foothills Land Trust (DFLT), www.dflt.org, recently announced Prescription for Nature, an exciting new program that encourages a healthier lifestyle through outdoor exercise. Did you know that walks in nature can improve cognitive brain function, help with stress management and enhance overall mental health? Who among us could not use some that?
The Land Trust and their partners have selected trails rated by level of difficulty and accessibility to help patients, families and anyone looking for a bit of exercise and diversion to find a path suited to their needs and physical ability. The ‘easiest’ trails include a trail through the Carefree Desert Gardens in our town center and the nearby Gateway Desert Awareness Park. Local Carefree businesses including Carefree Physical Therapy, Just Breathe Pilates, Dr. Fabio’s Integrative Healing & Wellness, and Sterling Structural Therapy worked with the Land Trust to make this path to better health a reality. Details can be found at the DFLT website.
For those looking for a more invigorating workout, Happy Fitness with Patricia has organized masked and social distancing workout sessions Monday through Thursday from 8 to 9 a.m. in the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion in the Carefree Desert Garden. Classes include Zumba Fitness, Gentle Stretch, and Stretch and Breathe classes. Checkout www.HappyFitnessWithPatricia.com.
For something even more invigorating, try an early morning bike ride on the bike lanes bordering Tom Darlington Dr and Cave Creek Roads and then slip off into a neighborhood for an even quieter ride.
And, no matter your activity, as the morning temperatures climb, Carefree offers coffee, tea and breakfast and lunch at an assortment of restaurants including the Carefree Coffee Roastery, Black Mountain Coffee Shop, Venues Cafe, Confluence and the English Rose Tea Room. All offer curbside takeout and COVID compliant dining.
Please join us in Carefree for a bit of exercise and relaxation in a COVID safe and friendly environment. We look forward to seeing you.

Vice Mayor, Town of Carefree
Arthur Gimson: The Original “Yes Man.”
When one thinks of the term “Yes Man,” they think of someone who goes along with what anyone says, regardless of the benefit (or detriment). In this case, however, I use the term “Yes Man,” a bit differently. This particular “Yes Man” is one that never says no to helping out a neighbor or to doing their part to leave their community better than how it was found. The “Yes Man” I speak of is this year’s 2020 Foothills Caring Corps Humanitarian of the Year: Arthur Gimson.
I opened this month’s City Sun Times Newspaper and read an interesting article on Arthur’s upbringing in post-World War 2 England, and instantly learned his early influences in public service were from his parents. Arthur’s father worked two jobs, one in England’s version of Social Security, and a night job as an air raid warden, ensuring that residents were safe each evening by ensuring that there was as little light portrayed from homes as possible into the night sky. Food rationing occurred for nearly a decade after the end of the war. Arthur’s mother was the consummate neighbor, having bake sales and donating proceeds to those in need, and providing life lessons to give beyond one’s means to give, for the sake of being neighborly. Arthur took those lessons into adulthood, and held key management positions, encouraging employees to participate in community service activities in their free time. In the years that followed, Arthur has served on the Carefree Town Council, with Foothills Caring Corps, and to this day continues to serve his homeowner’s association.
The word “humbling” was used in this story to describe Arthur’s demeanor when it comes to being recognized, which I believe is fitting. I have had the opportunity to chat with Arthur several times, and he has enlightened me on town activities from his perspective, and not in an overbearing or strongly opinionated manner, but very encouraging, which has helped guide me as I continue to learn how best to serve others in our community.
A servant leader is one who collaborates and mentors, and Arthur is a true servant leader in a community full of servant leaders, a volunteer in a community of volunteers. Congratulations to the 2020 Foothills Caring Corps Humanitarian of the Year (and a real “Yes Man”): Arthur Gimson.
--Vince D’Aliesio, a Carefree neighbor trying his best to follow Arthur Gimson’s example of selfless service.

Donations are not what they should be at this point but we are working on that.
Cheers!!

Dear Lyn,
THIS LETTER IS NOT AN ENDORSEMENT OF ANY CANDIDATES!
Thank you so very much for doing the research and sharing with your readers the beginning stages of the fight over water service between Cave Creek and Carefree.
What really caught my attention is not what Mayor Bunch is posting on Facebook to save face while he runs opposed for another term, but the emails in which it appears that the two town mayors were possibly colluding to avoid litigation over the IGA and the desire to welcome the Empire development project for the NE corner of Cave Creek Rd. and Carefree hwy.
In a meeting between Mayors Bunch and Peterson at the Grotto Cafe on Feb. 8th, 2018, Mayor Bunch suggested "a willingness to sell the rights to Carefree to provide water service to the NE corner, with Carefree water."
Considering that this offer would mean a "carve out" from the original IGA for ONLY ONE Carefree property, this offer appears to be highly unethical at the least.
Rather than seeing Cave Creek's refusal to serve that Carefree property as a breach of (the IGA) contract in the first place, Mayor Peterson and Vice Mayor Crane suggested that this offer "merited consideration".
The next day, Feb. 9th, 2019, Mayor Peterson sent an email to Mayor Bunch.
In the email Mayor Peterson stated that "we have been mulling over the idea we discussed yesterday morning and are intrigued..."
He then requested a second meeting with Mayor Bunch to further discuss the situation.Cancelling the IGA and bringing 1000 Carefree residents onto Carefree water was NOT the main concern on the minds of these town officials. If anything, it appears as though both towns were trying to make a plan or contract which would actually continue to leave 1000 Carefree residents on Cave Creek water.
We have been assured time and time again that we will be on Carefree water once arbitration is over. But arbitration has been delayed because "of COVID".
I sincerely hope that the "COVID" delay is not code talk for " let's see if Cave Creek gets a new mayor first".
ALL Carefree residents should be watching this issue because cancelling the IGA means we will never have to go to Cave Creek if and when another developer comes to our town.
And, of course, ALL Carefree residents deserve to have the same high standards in quality water and delivery.
