Issue #862, October 12, 2020
The Town Council approved two Proclamations:
The month of October, 2020, is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, to raise awareness of the need to enhance education, prevention and intervention efforts to decrease the prevalence of domestic violence.
November 1st, 2020 will be “Extra Mile Day” in acknowledgement of those individuals in Carefree who are inspirational in their efforts and commitment to make organizations, families, the community, the country or the world a better place.
Mayor Les Peterson said the deadline to register to vote has been extended through October 23rd at 5 PM. He asked Kandace Contreras to elaborate. Mrs. Contreras explained that the court ordered this extension due to Covid 19, but 2 appeals have been filed. Maricopa County is respecting the court order, and those registering now will be eligible to vote in the upcoming election. Some other counties are waiting for the outcome of the appeals.
Spirit in the Desert Retreat has graciously volunteered to open their doors for in-person voting on November 2nd and 3rd from 8 AM-5 PM. Cave Creek Town Hall will also be open for in-person voting from October 22nd through November 3rd, including Saturday. A mail-in ballot drop box will be available at Carefree Town Hall during the normal working hours of 8 AM to 4:30 PM, starting October 16th. Carefree Town Hall will be accepting mail-in ballots on November 2nd from 8 AM to 5 PM, and on November 3rd from 6 AM to 7 PM. There are no assigned polling places this year. Voters may vote at any open polling location.

Mayor Peterson reported that the census will be counting residents through October 31st. Carefree was at the low end of participation, but the Town has been making a concerted effort to get everyone counted. The State of Arizona participation is in the 90-95% range.

Mayor Peterson noted that there are currently 4 legal actions pending. He felt the Town was in a good position. "We're on the side of the angels, as far as I'm concerned, on all of them." They are coming up soon, and have entailed a lot of work.

Mayor Peterson announced that there are 2 openings on the Planning & Zoning Commission, which have been advertised. To the best of his knowledge, 3 or 4 candidates have submitted applications and biographies. If any other Carefree residents are interested, they are welcome to throw their hats into the ring.
