Hello friends. You may have heard about some changes we had to make at the museum due to the Covid environment, which prevented us from reopening and having any in-person interactive events earlier this fall. As a result, we had to address some staffing concerns and downsize a bit while we navigate through this turbulent economic climate. Suzanne Johnson, previously our Board Vice President, has been appointed to be our Interim Executive Director. Many of you know Suzanne, as she's been a desert foothills resident for over 40 years and LOVES our community. I have yet to see her not greet a single person that she sees anywhere she goes. She's a wonderful person that will breathe new life into the museum both internally and through outreach. Remi Pettus is our Museum Program Coordinator, and we also have a full time curator, Elizabeth Kapp.
Volunteers and donations keep us going: We need both. If you have been a volunteer in the past, we want to welcome you back. We have some changes coming at the Cave Creek Museum that will add an exciting dimension to our exhibits, and ultimately bring a world-wide spotlight on the desert foothills! Thank you to all of the volunteers and stakeholders that have stuck with us, and we welcome anyone new (and returning) that want to see what we are doing! Our doors open back up November 18th with a free open house to all Carefree and Cave Creek residents (donations appreciated)--- Its your day! Go to our website https://cavecreekmuseum.org/ or call us: 480.488.2764

(Lyn's note: The Museum is a fun place to visit, with many neat artifacts, events, and attractions like the operational Stamp Mill. If you haven't been there, do pay it a visit, and consider joining as a member! See the press release below in the non profit section.)
That’s a spectacular shot of a beautiful view! Your husband is an amazing photographer!

Hi Lyn,
What a gift you and Herbie have given us and this cast with this recording! The Elaine character (Rachel Weiss) was so sad this weekend because her husband was unable to see the show. He has not missed a show of hers in 10 years. I was able to tell her that Herbie was going to video on Sunday and that I would make sure she received the link. She was overwhelmed and so happy.
I will also be giving the cast the link of photos also and we will be using some on our website.
Thank you to Herbie for sharing his artistic eye and talent with our community and the cast of Arsenic and Old Lace. Truly amazing!
Thank you so much !

Thanks, Lyn, again for promoting DFT. It was so nice meeting you and Herbie in person at the Holland Center. Know we appreciate all you do for the community.
The pictures from the dress rehearsal are wonderful and I so enjoyed them. We would love for the two of you to come see the play at the performance of your choice.
We so appreciate your support for DFT and the Holland Center. Hope you will be able to join us this weekend.

(Lyn's note: We attended and recorded the Sunday matinee. The play was wonderful; the actors were great. "Arsenic and Old Lace" has always been a favorite of ours.)
I just want to say how surprised and humbled by the Awards given. It is my pleasure to be involved in the Veterans Memorial at Carefree honoring our Veterans and the brave men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Meeting such an amazing group of people so involved in their community is Inspiring.
Thank You!

Hi Lyn,
Tonight we found a black poison bait box (complete with dead, decaying rat) inside our locked gate in our backyard. We do not use these horrendous traps which are so dangerous to other wildlife. Either a wild animal dragged this into our yard or someone threw this trap over our gate. Either prospect is disgusting. I know you have asked people in the past not to use these bait traps. Could you please remind everyone?
Thanks,
Linda Zeien
(Lyn's note: Pets have also been inadvertently poisoned from the use of these traps. There is nothing good about them.)

Cave Creek Museum
Announces Appointment Of
Suzanne D. Johnson
Interim Executive Director
Announces Appointment Of
Suzanne D. Johnson
Interim Executive Director
Friday, October 16, 2020, Cave Creek Museum announced the appointment of Suzanne D. Johnson as Interim Executive Director of the Cave Creek Museum.
“We are very fortunate to have someone with Suzanne’s talents serving the desert foothills community. She has the experience and charisma to forge partnerships and develop relationships that are crucial to the Museum’s goals,” said Vince D’Aliesio, President, Cave Creek Museum Board of Directors. “She calls everyone a friend.” Johnson has stepped down from her position as a member of the Board of Directors and will assume the responsibilities of Interim Executive Director, effective October 19, 2020. The Cave Creek Museum will open on November 18, 2020 for the 2020-2021 Season.
“We anticipate great things ahead,” said D’Aliesio, “especially with such a strong 2020-2021 Board of Directors providing perspective and leadership: Bill Kosanke, Interim Vice President; Bill Oelman, Treasurer; Frank Tyrol, Board Member; and Reg Monachino, Board Member.” D’Aliesio emphasized the importance of community involvement, not only from the community at large, but as an investment by history buffs throughout Arizona. “We need your help. Volunteers are essential, as essential as donations.”
“The Museum staff has been reorganized and downsized, effective immediately, due to the extended effects of the public health crisis. We should note that key members of our team have been retained. Remington Pettus will continue as Museum Program Coordinator, and Elizabeth Kapp as Museum Curator,” according to D’Aliesio. “We wish Karrie Porter Brace and Becca Bober luck in their future endeavors, and appreciate their service to the Cave Creek Museum.”
Suzanne D. Johnson, a longtime resident of the desert foothills, is recognized Valley-wide for her dedicated and innovative approach to civic and non-profit fundraising, and documentary filmmaking and publishing. D’Aliesio recently introduced her as “one of those exceptional people who can retain historical and artistic perspective, while encouraging (insisting upon?) a move into the future.”
Johnson’s professional achievements, through community collaborations and her company Gnosis Media, include the Cave Creek Museum’s Gerry Jones Exhibit, Lecture and Tour 2019; “Cowboys Don’t Do Lunch - The Photographs of Herb Cohen” 2018; Desert Foothills Library “Conversation Chronicles” 2014; Cave Creek Film & Arts Festival; Taste of Cave Creek; Cave Creek Oral History; Habitat for Humanity; BMO/Harris “Brilliant at the Basics”; Desert Foothills Film Festival; and much more.

Cave Creek Cemetery
Daughters of the American Revolution National Day of Service October 11, 2020
Cave Creek Cemetery
This cemetery was an idea by area resident, Elmer Gillespie and became a pioneer cemetery in 1955 after the land was donated by the National Forest Service. The eclectic design calls for the cemetery to retain its desert landscape and unique grave sites. The Town of Carefree maintains the rustic cemetery with help from local organizations. This year, Black Mountain Foothills Chapter of DAR volunteered their services on their National Day of Service.
After several warm morning hours, 10 members, 1 associate member, 1 prospective member, one Vice Mayor, one husband of a member, and one JAC member gathered 20 bags of clippings and trash (plus a fallen dead cactus) to be picked up by the town waste company later.

Beginning October 1st, the Foothills Caring Corps will be expanding the qualifying trips for their Medical Transport Program. Robin Cochran, the Foothills Caring Corps Executive Director explains, “Our COVID safety protocols have been implemented and state of the art sanitization equipment is now being utilized so that we can safely provide additional essential programs and services to our Neighbors who need us now more than ever.” In addition to trips for dialysis and cancer treatment, the medical transportation program will now be providing trips for cardiac and crucial eye appointments.
The Van Transportation Program will also be re-introduced for select trips for crafting and education. Additionally, the Handyman Program will also be available. Each of these services will assist the Neighbors under specific guidelines. Social distancing, hand sanitizing and mask wearing are mandatory for both Volunteers and Neighbors.
The mission of the Foothills Caring Corps is to help older adults and individuals with disabling conditions who reside in the Northeast Valley - Foothills Community to remain living independently in their own homes for as long as possible. We do this through a force of volunteers and staff who provide in-home services, transportation services, community services and support. These services provide access to activities that promote physical, mental, and emotional health. KIWANIS CLUB OF CAREFREE IS PROJECTING A “BANNER YEAR!”Kiwanis Club of Carefree is moving into our New Year with newly elected officers, new plans, and goal to set a new record in support for our Kiwanis community! We are committed to creating awareness and recognition of the Kiwanis projects directed toward “supporting the kids” in this local area. We are posting banners in Carefree and Cave Creek calling attention to the Kiwanis activities as we do lots more than just having the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast twice a year! Each year, for the last several years, Kiwanis has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the local community with scholarships, Chrome Book Computers, and financial support for local smaller, but especially important charities and projects.
Shown here is the incoming Kiwanis president, Ms. Kimberly Marie Jack, presenting our new banner to Carefree Mayor Les Peterson and Vice Mayor John Crane, (just in case you do not recognize them behind those respectful masks.)
Please, every time you see these blue Kiwanis banners, think of the kids the Kiwanis are helping right here in our own backyard! These kids need all the help we can give them.
The Kiwanis Club of Carefree is one of the largest Kiwanis clubs in the world, with roughly 150 members. Our focus is on helping children recognize and develop their potential. We support post-secondary scholarships, summer art programs, special needs support, youth service organizations and more. To find out more or become a Carefree Kiwanis member visit kiwnaiscrefree.org.
