During the July Current Events, Councilman Vince D'Aliesio reported that he was recently asked by the Cave Creek Unified School District's (CCUSD), Superintendent Dr. Cort Monroe, to sit on the committee to hire the new football coach at Cactus Shadows High School. He took the responsibility very seriously because he has an extensive sports background for years and years, and is a champion for young people. He believes that coaches have a lifelong influence on our young people and future leaders. Mr. D'Aliesio wanted to introduce, "the two most important people in the room here tonight", Cactus Shadows Principal, Sarah Barela, and the new football coach, Chris Dixon. It's what they represent in educating our future leaders. Mr. D'Aliesio noted that Coach Dixon is a small business owner and is raising his kids here, so he is a part of our community. He invited Coach Dixon to come to the podium.
Coach Dixon said he moved here last summer but has been coming here for the last 30 years from Billings, Montana. He loves the small community atmosphere. Although the Carefree/Cave Creek area is a small part of CCUSD, he wanted everyone to know that they are not going to forget about this part of town. He is available to do anything to provide the students from this area with opportunities to participate in the football program. He asked if the Council members had any questions. Councilwoman Cheryl Kroyer asked if we were going to have a winning team this season, to general chuckles from the Council and the audience. He replied that he had some doubts this year, "but in 2 years, I got you!"
Mr. D'Aliesio said Coach Dixon was too humble. He came to CCUSD from the Arizona Rattlers, where he was the coach for the quarterbacks and running backs, our local arena football team in Arizona. He is arguably the greatest quarterback who ever played arena football. He is in the Hall of Fame. He is very well known. He's becoming a familiar face in town. Mr. D'Aliesio reiterated that the Coach's wife owns a business here and they are raising their children here.
Coach Dixon said he wanted to keep the kids here at home, at their local high school, where he feels they belong. He wants to build this community, and would welcome any grants that are available to help keep it going in the right direction.
Mayor Les Peterson noted that the demographics in the area show a rise in the number of families with young children. It's not that far from major metropolitan areas and is a nice place to live. He said that a number of the Carefree Council members attend Dr. Seuss Day at CCUSD and read to the grade school kids. It is not unusual to see that 40% of those kids are from Carefree, so it's something that's growing. He echoed and appreciated Coach Dixon's words. The Mayor thanked him for coming and looked forward to seeing the Coach helping build outstanding young adults. The Coach looked forward to participating in that goal.
