Hi Lyn:
Because of COVID-19 the Carefree Veterans Day program has been restructured from a 2 hour program with 250 to 300 guests in attendance to an all day program where guest may stop by throughout the day.
Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, will begin at sunrise, 6:57 a.m. when Boy Scouts from local Troop 603, will raise the flag at the Veterans Memorial in Carefree. Then, throughout the day until 4 p.m., with a special focus at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., visitors will be invited to spend time at the Memorial, chat with a veteran who helped design and build the Memorial, speak with other vets and become acquainted with local veterans support organizations such as the Veterans Heritage Project, the Black Mountain Foothills Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the American Revolution Major Winfield Scott Chapter, the Association of the US Army, Institute of Healing of Memories, US Army Recruiters, the Military Order of the World Wars Phoenix Chapter / Arizona Youth Leadership Conference and American Legion Post 34. Visitors will be asked to social distance and wear masks.
While there will not be speakers in music as in years past, this year guests will have an opportunity to view the Memorial speak with and say thank you to veterans and learn about several local veteran supporting organizations.
I suspect the busiest time will be between noon and 1:30. Thanks for coming out.
Best regards,
John Crane
Several of our wonderful Carefree restaurants are making deserts for the Desert Foothills Theater production of "The Sound of Music", which will be showing in the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion from November 12th-14th and 19th-21st (see below under Non Profit Info).
All the details of the restaurant participation are on Carefreerestaurants.com
We ate at Alberto's last night and he gave us one of his fig/marmalade tarts to taste, made from scratch with fresh ingredients. It was delicious! Alberto's tarts will be served on Friday, November 13th. I asked him to send me the recipe so our readers could check out the ingredients.
Recipe for the fig/marmalade tart:
The crust is 1 kg of all purpose flour, 8 egg yolks, 600 gr.of butter,400 gr of sugar. The marmalade is composed of 4 different types of figs, white and black from California, sptembrini and pagnottari from Italy, fresh strawberries, cantaloupe, and red wine. We actually had a very good year with donations, better than expected, which means we get to give away more money this year than last, isn’t that a testament to our community and their support of our vets? I am so proud of our humans.
Thank you Lyn and Herbie, your artistic contribution to this event is incredibly valuable and I am so grateful for your continued support! Your addition of Mike Ferrell to the team allowed for video and stills of the same moment, you three are pros! I know Chris Wesson of Benchmark also feels very grateful to you all for the content produced. Our website just keeps getting better.

Great job Herb, Lyn and Mike! It was a lovely morning for the Veterans Day Run and all of the folks organizing the event did a great job. Given the limits of Covid safety it was wonderful to see the turnout. I look forward to doing my walk again next year!
Many thanks to all the organizers, sponsors, and those Riders who kept us on track and safe!

Lyn,
I am curious as to the placement of the water tank referenced in the Sonoran article. Has the location been decided and if so what was the criterion/criteria for that decision.
Thanks,
John Nimsky
(Lyn's note: I forwarded the question to Gary Neiss)
Hi John and Lyn,
Thank you for the questions.
The proposed underground water storage facility is associated with the conceptual plans to serve the Carefree residents currently on the Cave Creek water utility system. As has been outlined publicly over the last several years, these Carefree residents have numerous concerns over lack of representation in their water resources and therefore, the Town began to explore its agreed upon option with Cave Creek to acquire these accounts and address this lack of representation.
When annexing a new system into an existing water system the existing system needs to be re-balanced to ensure adequate water supplies and pressures throughout the resulting expanded system. In this case, it necessitates a new underground reservoir. The Town currently has a underground reservoir that is more than 3 times the size of the proposed underground reservoir at an entry gateway to the community located at Stagecoach Pass and Pima Road.
When locating these underground reservoirs, it important from an engineering perspective to locate the underground reservoir at the proper elevation to use gravity to pressurize the system. In fact, in communities along the East Coast as well as the Midwest, due to the flatness of the terrain, many of the reservoirs in these communities are placed up in the air to create the pressure needed to feed the system. With our rolling terrain within the desert foothills that is not necessary nor has ever been proposed.
Another element that is important is the location of existing supporting infrastructure so the tank may be filled. In this case, there is a significant existing 10 inch water line that runs through the subject proposed site. Furthermore, the subject proposed site has an easement which permits the installation of utilities such as this, which is why the existing 10 inch line runs through this specific location. Other underground utilities also exist in the general area of this easement, which include but are not limited to, infrastructure serving waste water. As is typical in these underground utility installations, the desert vegetation is restored over top of the buried infrastructure which is why many residents are not aware of the 1,000,000 gallon buried fresh water reservoir located at Stagecoach Pass and Pima Roads. Once again, that buried fresh water reservoir is over 3 times larger than the one being considered and thus, a significantly smaller footprint.
I hope that clarifies your questions.
Best regards,
Gary Neiss
Hi Gary,
Thanks for the explanation. However I am still unclear as to the location of the new underground reservoir. Could you clarify the location?
Thanks,
JN
Yes, typically these reservoirs are located adjacent to existing water lines which are used to fill the underground reservoir. The proposed underground water reservoir would be along Tom Darlington Drive just south and east of the existing entry monument sign. This is a similar position to the existing underground water tank on Pima Road located just south and east of that entry monument sign. The burying of the tank permits the re-vegetation and natural desert appearance over top of it. The proposed underground tank would be more than 3.5 times smaller than the existing underground water reservoir currently located at the entrance monument on Pima Road.
