During Current Events, Mayor Les Peterson noted that there had been a major fire at the iconic "Wedding Cake" house on the southeast side of Black Mountain that was visible from quite a distance. Fire departments from multiple municipalities, as well as Rural/Metro (R/M), responded. R/M as been covering Carefree since 1969, and the Town has contracted with them to provide town-wide fire protection since 2012. They have done an admirable job for Carefree.
The current contract expires in June of next year. The Town will be taking a look at subjects such as mutual aid and automatic aid. The Mayor was soliciting volunteers to serve on a fire subcommittee to explore options to best prepare Carefree for the future. We have one of the most beautiful desert landscapes in the world, but it is one that also harbors fires, and the Town wants to be prepared. There were 2 very serious wildfires in Cave Creek last year that utilized equipment and firefighters from 8 or 9 different sources, some 41 units. Carefree is seeking people who understand how government works, and who have backgrounds in finance and risk management to serve on this subcommittee.

On a related note, R/M Captain Ryan Travis has secured a grant of approximately $27,000 for new light packs, monitors, and defibrillators for the Carefree ambulance and firetruck from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation (FSPSF). Captain Travis was not at the Council meeting because he had been at the "Wedding Cake" house fire from the beginning and was now sleeping, but R/M Fire Chief John Kraetz was present to represent R/M in case there were any questions. Mayor Peterson said FSPSF has been an outstanding participant, working with the Carefree Fire Department (CFD) to identify needs and to help fund them.
Gary Neiss extended the Town's thanks to Captain Travis, noting this was the 3rd or 4th grant he has secured for the CFD. Last year, a grant yielded approximately $98,000 to replace expired light packs and air packs. Captain Travis has gone out of his way to secure these grants. The Town owes him a debt of gratitude for his continual commitment to researching and securing these grants. A lot of work is involved. In order to secure the grant, the Council was required to approve the resolution to accept the grant, press releases must be published, and the FSPSF logo must appear on the equipment. Mr. Neiss again thanked FHPSF and Captain Ryan.
Mayor Peterson also asked Chief Kraetz to pass on their thanks to Captain Ryan, who has secured substantial amounts of grant money for much needed equipment. The Council unanimously approved the Resolution to accept the grant.
