Issue #853, August 28, 2020
Wednesday of this week saw 2 installations in the Carefree Desert Gardens. In the morning, the 3 stone slabs were set by a crane, Phase 1 of the Carefree Veterans Memorial Monument. In the afternoon, a boulder specially selected by Gerry and Leslie Jones was delivered by crane to a spot by the sundial, and will be dedicated to Mr. Jones. Gerry Jones designed and built many of the original homes in Carefree, and has, over the years, done so much for our community.

"In Carefree Truth Issue #852 dated August 24th, we informed our readers that progress on the Veterans Memorial was moving forward. We mentioned that a crane would be on site on Wednesday, August 26th at 9:00 am to place the three stones that will be the center piece of the Memorial. The crane arrived on schedule and the stones were stood up. They look great and will be a fitting center piece once the Memorial is complete and the bronze plaques are attached.
Tasks that remain are:
Preparation of the site for the installation of the pavers.
Installation of the pavers.
Placement of curbing around the Memorial.
Installation of three benches.
The final task will be attaching the six bronze medallions honoring the branches of the Armed Forces and placement of the dedication plaque on the front stone.
We anticipate these tasks will be completed within the next several weeks. Once all the tasks are complete we will select an appropriate date to hold a dedication ceremony and will announce this date to the community.
We invite everyone to visit the site and witness the progress firsthand. Donations are still being accepted and are greatly appreciated. Please visit https://attveterans.org/carefree/ to make your tax-deductible donation."

"I'm excited because they are excited about this. Gerry and Leslie spent months trying to find just the right boulder to represent what Gerry feels is a small imprint in representing his love for our community, and what they felt would blend in well with our town core.
Tom Nichols Excavating Company Vice President Charles Nichols was on hand to donate his time, crane, and crew in collecting the boulder from the Jones' property high atop Black Mountain and carefully place it near the Sun Dial. He generously gave his time in ensuring the boulder was placed to Gerry and Leslie's preference, angled and spaced in such a way that pedestrians enjoying the beautiful Desert Gardens can appreciate this magnificent 6000 pound boulder.
The town of Carefree and Cave Creek Museum are planning a tribute to Gerry Jones, and all of our residents can join us in celebrating the impact he made in helping to create Carefree, what is now the best small town in Arizona! We are a small community and are all connected. Gerry and Leslie Jones represent the best of that connection, and this boulder represents one of many legacies that the Jones' are leaving this town. We can all be proud to call Gerry and Leslie Jones our friends."
