Mayor Les Peterson expressed deep appreciation for all the work the teachers do for the children in our area. The Mayor said this is the highlight for he and the other Council members. "It's an honor and a thrill for all of us." He turned the floor over to Councilwoman Cheryl Kroyer.
Ms. Kroyer noted that the Town of Carefree, in conjunction with the Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD), honors one outstanding staff member from each school or department each quarter of the school year. Ms. Kroyer read the award winners' name and a short narrative about the honoree. Each winner would receive an award certificate from the Town of Carefree and a Carefree Cares pin. Because this meeting was held via Zoom, and CCUSD would also recognize the winners at its upcoming quarterly Governing Board meeting, the Carefree Cares certificates would be handed out at the Board meeting. Each honoree would also receive a $50 gift card from the Town's notary collections, which are put into a pool and donated to a worthy cause.
The criteria for selection are that the winners volunteer substantial time and expertise to the school and/or the community; are a positive role model for the students, staff and community; serve as an inspiration to others; and always represent CCUSD in a positive and professional manner. The selections were submitted by Principals and Directors at each site.

Ms. Kroyer congratulated the winners and announced that the awards would be presented to the winners in person on Monday night at the CCUSD Governing Board meeting.
Councilman Stephen Hatcher commented that the common theme is the countless hours, dedication and commitment these winners have shown. "It is absolutely fantastic. They obviously love their work and are passionate. With that comes excellence. They make Dr. Monroe's job a little easier." He thanked them.
Councilman Vince D'Aliesio tipped his hat to Mr. Pettinato for recognizing teacher's aid Randee Huffer, who had a most profound impact on his kids during the 7 years they attended Horseshoe Trails. Randee was the first person they saw when they got out of the car in the morning and the last person they saw when they got back into the car in the afternoon. She was the Guardian of the Gate, who always had a cheery greeting for the students. His kids had many fond memories of the Horseshoe Trails teachers and staff members, but Randee was special. "Thank you, Randee."
Mayor Peterson said they so appreciate all of the CCUSD teachers and staff members, and love all of the wonderful things they do for the whole community and the children in particular. He thanked them and said he looked forward to seeing them in person on Monday night.

Mayor Peterson, Councilwoman Kroyer, and Councilman D'Aliesio attended the CCUSD Governing Board meeting on Monday night to present the Carefree Cares award certificates and gift certificates. Both Mayor Peterson and CCUSD Superintendent Dr. Cort Monroe agreed that this is a high point in their duties.
Mayor Peterson explained that, "The Carefree Cares program came out of a conversation I had with Dr. Debbie Burdick, the former Superintendent of Schools at CCUSD, following a meeting of many of the other Superintendents from throughout the Valley discussing how to strengthen the public school system. Many of the comments related to what the meeting participants wanted the Legislature to do to improve the schools.
"Reflecting on the comments made in the meeting, Dr. Burdick and I agreed that we should take the next step rather than wait for the Legislature or anyone else to act first. Who would know better how to strengthen our schools than ourselves who were integrally involved in their management and operation?
"As the appropriate next step, Dr. Burdick suggested what has become the Carefree Cares Program. Each semester, she recommended that we single out and recognize those of CCUSD’s Teachers and Staff who were making the most outstanding contributions to the students and the entire community, those who had truly gone the extra mile to make a meaningful contribution to the education of their students and the entire school. Let’s let our best Teachers and Staff know that we appreciate their expertise and efforts to provide our children and their students, with the best educational experience possible.
"Via the Carefree Cares program, one person would be recommended each semester by the Principle from each of the seven schools in the CCUSD system, and their contributions recognized at a Carefree Town Council meeting and a CCUSD Governing Board meeting. In addition to the recognition from their peers, the CCUSD Governing Board and the Carefree Town Council, each person receiving the Carefree Cares award would receive a Certificate of Recognition and Appreciation, a special pin and a gift certificate funded by the Carefree Town Staff.
We are now in the third year of the Program, and our hope and expectation is that it will continue on indefinitely."
