Kandace Contreras reported that Sandy and Augustine Atherson applied for a Series 12 liquor license for their soon to open restaurant, Athens on Easy Street, located across from Carefree Town Hall in the building that had previously housed the Sundial Cafe. She said the menu looks great and recommended approval of the liquor license application.
Sandy said he and his son Augustine feel a sense of welcoming and wanted to thank everyone in town. They met Mayor Les Peterson and Vice Mayor John Crane at last year's Chanukah celebration, and he has been meeting with Steve Prokopek now. He has a great feeling and is looking forward to opening.
Augie and his wife Rita will be running the restaurant. They will begin with the traditional breakfast and lunch, with a Mediterranean twist, and will eventually move into a lunch and dinner setting. They will play by the Covid 19 rules. They live 2 miles away from the restaurant, so it is a great hike in the morning. They are all looking forward to becoming part of the Carefree family.
Mayor Peterson said he is looking forward to the new restaurant. Councilman Stephen Hatcher asked when they planned to open. Mr. Atherton said they were earmarking mid January for a soft opening in time for the Thunderbird Artists show, as long as all the permits are in place. The Mayor asked Mrs. Contreras to define the difference between a Series 12 and a Series 7 liquor license. Mrs. Contreras explained that a Series 12 license is for restaurants, not bars, where mainly food is served with liquor, beer and wine to accompany meals.
Vice Mayor Crane said he is "as happy to have you as you are to have us". "You and your son are full of ideas." Councilman Vince D'Aliesio said he met Rita a few months ago and showed her the 2 original gas lamps by the restaurant, so there is some history right there.
The motion to grant the Series 12 liquor license to Athens on Easy Street was unanimously approved. Mr. Atherton thanked the Council.
