Thank you for so clearly and eloquently summarizing all of the facts regarding Carefree’s term limits. I would just like to add one point: The voters are the ultimate term limits. If they like what we are doing they vote to keep us in office. If they don’t like what we are doing they vote us out. Period.
When I first ran for Council (now serving my second term) I was literally begged to run because there weren’t enough people to fill all of the Council seats. To your point terming out people who are willing to volunteer to help their community, when there aren’t enough of us around, is a big mistake.
I don’t think any of us say it enough: thank you to you and Herbie for being the voice of truth in our community.
Cheryl Kroyer
I think, based on previous messages, that he may lean away from term limits for small communities where officials have two year terms and a recall procedure.
Arthur Gimson
(Lyn's note: Yes, Mr. Blumel wrote that he had done consulting work for a small town in Florida where he felt term limits were not appropriate due to their population and their election history, and he recommended against them. It sounded much like Carefree.)
Good job Lyn- many thanks. The reasons for term limits being impractical (i.e. lack of people from our small pool of citizens) is well stated. Personally, I hate career politicians & wish Mr. Blumel success in his bid to establish them for Congress- sadly Congress has to approve such term limits & I doubt any congressional members care enough for the good of the country to do so.
In the past, Carefree has had a number of self-serving Council members and aligned adversaries (Sonoran News being the most egregious IMHO) with only their interests in mind. Fortunately the good guys have won so far & we are blessed to have the Council we have (honest people doing what they truly believe to be in the best interests of Carefree). People vote in Carefree and the recall process works- term limits would only make citizen governance of Carefree impractical if not impossible.
Thanks again,
Fred Layman
W O W. Altho the Town Council has a thankless job, your self-imposed job is even more thankless. “We the People” are appreciative of your and Herb’s time and commitment in keeping us citizens informed.

Good morning Lyn!
Excellent correspondences explaining the history of term limits in Carefree.
Thank you for sharing.
Catherine Zindell
Interesting and I agree with your take on term limits totally, for small communities!
Larry Holland
Thanks. I like John Crane also.

Lyn,
I also have a BSBA from Univ. of Florida and post grad. degree from Thunderbird.
I used to agree with his point of view. But looking at some of the recently elected Democrats such as AOC I can now appreciate some of the older and hopefully wiser Federal elected officials who may be able to protect the rest of us from them.
He is way off base for a small town like Carefree.

(Lyn's note: Even Mr. Blumel admitted that he had done consulting work for a small town where term limits were inappropriate. It sounded a lot like Carefree.)
Lyn,
Since you promote your newsletter as ‘the Carefree Truth”, I am surprised that you left out the fact in the email below that Governor Ducey signed into law HB 2721, which allows citizen mandated term limits for local elected officials to be fully enforceable.
Since you have opined extensively on this topic during the recent Carefree election, I would hope that in the spirit of “Truth” you will be informing your readers of this development.
John Nimsky
(Lyn's note: I was under the impression that everyone already knew about it. Mike Farrar has been heavily self promoting online about his involvement with it, and it ran in numerous newspapers. I assume that Mr. Farrar got in touch with Mr. Blumel in Florida. This Carefree Truth issue was in response to the passage of that Bill and Mr. Blumel's questions to me about it relative to Carefree.)

“I think I saw this movie.” Talk with Lloyd Meyer.
Ed Morgan
Ed, I know Lloyd organized something with Harold's and Harley Davidson years ago where they gave lectures on biker etiquette, and it was very effective. I will suggest that Les and Gary touch base with him. He has been working with them on the water issues too. Lloyd is my go-to guy for so many things. He and Donna are gems. Thanks for the reminder!
Lyn
Thanks for your kind words, Lyn. Yes, that program took a positive approach and turned out successful enough, we repeated it the following spring during actual Bike Week which had very good results, and the strong support of the AMA, Harley Davidson, the local Harley dealer, and the large motorcycle club, CycleRides, because they knew the consequences if we had to do it without their cooperation. Here are a couple pics of Ed Morgan and me putting up the noise ordinance signs, which I think Ed might enjoy seeing as a reminder of those days. We used the “carrot and stick’ approach and, fortunately the “carrot” worked. However, the stick is pretty big on this one, so if we’re having that problem again should be easy to resolve either way. There are a lot of other factors, of course, that made that program work and I still have a lot of that information and would be happy to meet with Les and Gary anytime if I can help. It’s been quite a few years since we did this and, given some of the biker behavior we witnessed during the last Bike Week, probably time to address it again.

Lloyd
I remember well the campaign Lloyd headed. The action we took was required due to citizen complaints of noise BUT also health, safety and welfare became an issue. One Sunday evening, after an afternoon of partying on Harold’s porch two on bike with no helmets wiped out on Tom Darlington near Bashas’. At least one died. We were named in a lawsuit due to gravel on the shoulder. Anything can happen.

Lyn,
As a biker myself who partakes in these events, it would be my suggestion for Carefree look to cater in their own way to the biker industry during that week. (If you can’t beat them, join them.) Not only would that be a financial boon to the Carefree community, it would also space the bikers out more. The event seems to be growing every year. Those bikers are looking for a good time, not a place to commit crimes.
Thank you!
Alan N. Webber
Lyn,
Seems like the same argument from Bob Coady days. My experience with these guys is that they are polite and courteous. I suppose like any other event there are exceptions.
