"Thomas Jefferson said a democracy is dependent on an informed citizenry. I don't care whether it sounds corny or not. It's the truth." -Jim Lehrer

During Current Events, Mayor Les Peterson noted that Bike Week would be taking place the next couple of weekends (after the time of the 4/6 Council meeting). The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) was aware of it and would be monitoring it in our area.
The Mayor reported that communications would begin soon on specific topics related to the acquisition of the Carefree Service Area. (This has already begun.)
Mayor Peterson said that it was with deep regret that the resignation of Councilman Mike Krahe was accepted. Dr. Krahe is moving out of the area. The Town will be seeking volunteers to fill his empty seat.

At the end of the meeting, Dr. Krahe shared his thoughts and feelings about leaving. He started by playing the song "Back Where it All Began" by the Allman Brothers, calling it some of the best guitar and harmony on the planet. He played this song because his reflections on the wonderful people on the Council and the staff took him back. "You guys are simply the best and it's been a real honor."
"I want to recognize Lyn and Herbie Hitchon because they've just been superior in supporting the town and what we're all trying to do. And I really think we made it to the other side, the town. We have a great strategic plan. We have tremendous economic development possibilities looming. The hotel, the condominiums. I have to thank Steve and Alex and Stacey, for so many things will blossom."
The Krahes are moving to Lexington, KY to be with their daughter and her family but will be looking for another place here, near Carefree, because their son and his family live here. "But it's been a real ride. And I have the deepest appreciation for each and all of you, and I wish you all the best."
Councilwoman Cheryl Kroyer said he will be missed. Mayor Peterson agreed. "Very much so. Thank you, Michael, for all you've done. You've been a great friend and we really appreciate the reference." Several of the Council members thanked Dr. Krahe and Vice Mayor John Crane wished him well.
