CORRECTING THE MISUNDERSTANDING OF CAREFREE WATER DEBT
Carefree Water does not have $32.4MM in debt, it has $18.5 MM
Debt is the amount that you pay interest on.
Interest is not debt.
For example, if you were to take out a mortgage of $250k at a 5% interest rate for 30 years, the monthly interest payments are about $1,300, $15,600 annually and $468,000 for the life of the loan. The total amount paid would be over 700k. Your mortgage statement says you have $250k in debt, not $700k. If you had to pay interest on $700k, the total interest and principal would be $1.35mm, and so on.
That’s the way debt and interest payments work.
Carefree water issued debt in the amount of $18.5MM in order to finance the infrastructure needed to bring all Carefree residents into our water system. The annual interest payments are variable through the life of the loan and total $13.5MM. Adding debt and interest payments together the total is $32.4mm. Carefree water debt is not $32.4mm and we are not paying interest on $32.4mm.
In municipal finance, long-term bonds are used to finance long-term assets. Though the bond principal of $18.5MM will be paid down over time, we will benefit over the long term from the useful life of the assets.
Another misunderstanding is who is paying the debt. The rates and charges on the NEW Carefree customers are paying for the new debt. The debt is not being paid from our town budget. The town budget and Carefree water budget are separate and this debt was issued by the water company.

A Veteran Supports John Crane for Mayor:
I would like to encourage the Carefree community to support John Crane for Mayor of Carefree.
I have been fortunate to serve with John on the board of the Desert Foothills Land Trust and feel lucky to have done so. John exhibits the qualities we should all want in a Mayor. He is fair, can listen to the opinions of others, and he has good judgment and excellent leadership skills. The Land Trust has benefitted from his thoughtful wisdom and clear thinking and I feel the Carefree community would be equally enhanced by John’s leadership.

I’m not going to debate the merits of Confluence vs other Carefree “special” restaurants. It is arguably the best of a small group. Personally while I have found the food to be interesting and well prepared, I don’t like dining in a parking lot next to a busy road.
The interior is crowded and noisy. Like your neighbor I have travelled around the world and have dined at the best Paris, Lyon et al have to offer. I’m not sure that 5 star restaurants are what is needed in Carefree.
The best restaurant in the area for many years was Binkleys and for various reasons it moved to Phoenix. Carefree Bistro was a nice local spot, but it closed. Several others have changed management and concept. Cartwright’s in CC to name one.
But that isn’t the point!
I just don’t think Carefree has compelling attractions for non locals, and as mentioned earlier, many locals don’t feel the need to shop/dine in Carefree. Whether it be Keelers, Venue, or Confluence, they are all good, but as The Michelin Guide says, not worth a detour for non locals. I’m not sure that dining offerings are the answer and our shops have neither the critical mass nor uniqueness to draw outsiders. If they did we would not be having this exchange.
I agree that “controlled” economic development is necessary to provide essential services, but I have not heard any suggestions on how that will be accomplished.
Being so close to Cave Creek is a liability. There are too many attractions very close by that interest visitors. I’m hopeful that the Hotel guests will provide a needed audience for the local restaurants and shops, but other than that source, I’m at a loss to come up with another that will supply the necessary revenues to meet the Town’s needs.
The various art shows attract outsiders, but hardly help local businesses and don’t showcase the town. I assume they do provide an economic benefit to the Town coffers.
Overall, clearly what we presently have isn’t working. The Town Council and others have to think outside the box. I’m sure Carefree isn’t the first town to face this dilemma.
I clearly don’t know the dynamics, but perhaps a merger with Cave Creek should be considered. Heresy some would say!

The Carefree and Cave Creek courts did consolidate, saving each town about $150 a year, but Cave Creek only cooperated because they were about to lose their court due to multiple violations. It was an advantageous merger because they own their court space (Carefree was renting theirs) and Carefree has a staff who play by the rules and do a great job. Sadly, for the most part, they don't play well together in the sandbox. I have always said they would be stronger together. I wouldn't suggest a merger because each has its own "personality", but it would sure be nice if there were more shared services.
We too were really disappointed when Carefree Bistro closed, but the owners went through a VERY nasty divorce. We loved Carefree Bistro, and they had done a lot to fix it up so it was very nice inside and out.
By the way, Brandon and Tori who bought Cafe Bink (now Confluence) from Kevin Binkley both worked closely with Kevin for years. Brandon was Kevin's sous chef, and he also was a chef at The Phoenician Resort at one point, so he has the experience and credentials. Confluence is the only place where Herbert will eat a filet mignon. And Confluence actually does get a lot of customers who drive up from Phoenix and Scottsdale. Binkley's moved to Phoenix and Kevin sold his Carefree and Scottsdale restaurants because he wanted to be back in the kitchen, his true passion, instead of out front talking to customers. He chose to keep the Phoenix location because he owns that building and was renting the other 2 spaces, so it was a logical business decision.
Most patio dining is by parking lots and/or busy streets. When we lived in suburban Philly, we used to hop over to London fairly often. It wasn't a bad flight from Philly. We used to love eating at the original Hard Rock Cafe, which was started by 2 American guys, and had great burgers and apple pie. It was located right on Piccadilly, so very heavy traffic on the patio, and the inside was always packed. But it was a lot of fun. The 2 guys had the walls filled with their personal stuff. When they sold it and it became a chain, it changed entirely.
Have you tried Alberto's in the Mariachi Plaza at the corner of Cave Creek and Tom Darlington? He's from Rome and cooks Italian food for Italians. He's been there for 20 years. He came here from Beverly Hills, where he owned a restaurant that was written up by a restaurant magazine as being the second best restaurant in America. A slew of the famous movie stars ate there. He left after the landlord tore down the building and didn't rebuild it. That's when he came here, originally to Phoenix, then bought the business in its current location from a friend who was retiring.
We eat out most of the time. My parents only knew each other for 2 weeks before getting married. They had no problem making decisions. Mom turned to Daddy the first morning and said, "Do you know how to make breakfast, or what kind of sandwich would you like?" I inherited the non-domestic gene. I grew up in restaurants for an obvious reason. We had a lot of great high end family owned restaurants in our immediate vicinity. But we have what I consider to be an absolute embarrassment of riches with our many and varied restaurants in Carefree.)

American Legion Post 34
American Legion Post 34 celebrates 75-year anniversary with freedom-focused salute, activities
American Legion Post 34 turns 75 this year and veterans have planned a year chock full of events, tributes, patriotism and the celebration of freedom. Faces of Freedom will produce a Korean War event from the era this May.
As part of an event planned for Saturday, May 21, 2022, American Legion Post 34 will invite veterans and the public to learn about the Post’s role during the Korean War, also known as the forgotten war.
The day begins with a brunch at 9 AM, which will feature a Bloody Mary and mimosa bar and egg burritos. At 10 AM, Post 34 will install its new officers for the coming year. Afterwards, the Town of Cave Creek will present Post 34 with the Local Landmark award for its long-standing role as a leader that helped shape the community. At 1 PM, Post 34 will feature Bill Johnson, well-known Bob Hope impersonator; the one-hour show will take place in its courtyard. Johnson has performed his tribute to the late, great Bob Hope across the US and the South Pacific to rave reviews. His tribute has been showcase at numerous events including as master of ceremonies, tributes to the troops and corporate gatherings. Tickets, which are $15 per show and $20 at the door, if available, can be purchased at the Post (after 10 AM). Seating is limited. A BBQ, served by Top Hat Catering, will take place from 2:30-5 PM. In addition, Korean War veterans will be honored during the event, which wraps up with music by the Painted Cave Band from 2:30-7:30 PM.
“There will be nostalgia everywhere as we transport people back in time to places our veterans knew,” adds Brian Fernandez, Post 34 Legion commander. ”While we will share veteran stories throughout the years, we also will feature war eras and our veterans’ role in supporting freedom. For this event, Korean veterans are invited to attend so they can be honored by all in attendance.”

A new exhibit has just opened at Cave Creek Museum’s Arizona Gold Mining Experience. The new mine shaft is a replica of a typical hard rock Arizona gold mine. To enhance the experience, lights flash and the earth shakes to replicate sequential dynamite explosions. Visitors will learn how the introduction of dynamite and compressed air rock drills increased a mine’s output, but also made it far more dangerous for Arizona miners at the time.
About the Experience
The Arizona Gold Mining Experience features the mine, a tram, a crusher and the 10-stamp mill as part of a 90-minute fascinating demonstration. The Arizona Gold Mining Experience runs the second Saturday of every month, October through May. 11 AM-12:45 PM in the museum lobby and admission is $7 for adults; $5 for seniors; children under 12 are free. Visitors should plan on arriving early so they can purchase admission prior to the event. Presenter Matthew Scott is a Life Associate Member of the Society of the Honor Guard, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Scott will talk about the selection and burial of the first Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.

Cave Creek Museum will remain open through Sunday, May 29, 2022, the last day of its 2021-22 season.
“We opened the doors in October 2022 with a record number of visitors,” says Evelyn Johnson, interim executive director. “The momentum has continued through the end of our season, which is May 29.
Johnson says the museum enjoyed many firsts throughout the season including record crowds for the new Arizona Gold Mining Experience, ghost adventures, record museum store sales and standing room only for its many Cave Creek Museum Presents series. The last program in the series will feature the Unknown Soldier Story on May 21 and the final Kiwanis Family Fun Days to Celebrate the USA takes place on May 15.
“I encourage Arizonans and visitors to bring friends and families to the museum before the end of May to see this year’s exhibits,” adds Johnson. Then, mark your calendar to return next season to see the changes that happened during the summer. However, there are many tasks to accomplish when we close our doors to the public: calendar planning, fund-raising, program decisions, painting and mailings to say nothing of the exhibit changes that take shape. Johnson says the museum enjoyed many firsts throughout the season including record crowds for the new Arizona Gold Mining Experience, ghost adventures, record museum store sales and standing room only for its many Cave Creek Museum Presents series. The last program in the series will feature the Unknown Soldier Story on May 21 and the final Kiwanis Family Fun Days to Celebrate the USA takes place on May 15.
“I encourage Arizonans and visitors to bring friends and families to the museum before the end of May to see this year’s exhibits,” adds Johnson. Then, mark your calendar to return next season to see the changes that happened during the summer. However, there are many tasks to accomplish when we close our doors to the public: calendar planning, fund-raising, program decisions, painting and mailings to say nothing of the exhibit changes that take shape. If you can help make these changes happen, please send an email or call. We look forward to another season of engagement with the community.”
The 51-year-old museum’s mission is to preserve the artifacts of the prehistory, history, culture and legacy of the Cave Creek Mining District and the Cave Creek/Carefree foothills area through education, research, and interpretive exhibits.
