Vice Mayor John Crane announced that the Foothills Caring Corps is running a Health & Wellness Expo on Thursday, November 7th, at the Desert Foothills Library. 24 local non profit organizations who help our neighbors will have tables set up there. The event is free, and the Vice Mayor said it is well worth taking the time to attend. Councilwoman Cheryl Kroyer noted that Carefree had a table there a couple of years ago. She was there most of the day handing out information about the town, and felt it was very beneficial. She got to meet people from the non profits and talked to the many residents who went through. Vice Mayor Crane said he would make sure that Carefree has a table again this year.
Councilman Vince D'Aliesio announced that the sports radio show he co-hosts Saturday mornings on AM 1060, the JV Sports Show, would be broadcasting live from the patio of the Black Mountain Coffee Shop from 7-8 AM on Saturday, October 12th. Carefree business owners and residents are welcome to join them, and business owners can talk about their businesses. The show is meant to spotlight everything that is good about Carefree. It is a lead-in to the Pumpkin Festival and the Season. The Mayor, Vice Mayor, and Ray Villafane will be there. Mayor Les Peterson added that the Enchanted Pumpkin Garden Festival will take place from October 18th-27th. It is an annual highlight.

Vice Mayor Crane announced that the AT&T Veteran's Day Charity 3 Miler would be held in Carefree on November 9th from 7 AM-1 PM. He said it is a great event, and introduced Kelsey, who organized it and did all the heavy lifting for the event. She works in the AT&T IT department, and is also involved with AT&T Veterans, a 501(c)3 non profit organization. The organization is fully volunteer, and all the proceeds go to veterans in need.

This is a community event. Kelsey met with Gene Orrico, acting as a representative of Kiwanis, early on in the planning stages. The focus of this event is on Gold Star families, for the kids of fallen soldiers, which ties in well with Kiwanis. She asked for assistance from the Town because she thought it would be an excellent event for Carefree that would bring people up here. Carefree is picturesque and would provide a gorgeous route for the run/walk event. They are sharing the day with the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, so it will be a busy day in town.
There will be boxes to collect non perishable food items. AT&T has an initiative about food insecurity, which is quite a problem in the Phoenix area. They are collecting items for the Foothills Food Bank, tying back to St. Mary's Food Bank. AT&T donated $150,000 to the AT&T Veterans 501(c)3, and is a sponsor of this race. They will have a truck on site, a mobile store where they can sell their wares.
There will be volunteers from Sonoran Trails Middle School and Cactus Shadows High School Key Clubs acting as the clean-up crews. Leashed dogs are welcomed. Kelsey said that anyone can do a single mile, or there is a virtual event. People who sign up for the virtual event will be mailed a shirt. She is grateful to be able to host this and believes it will become an annual event.
The organization will provide insurance, donated from another chapter, naming the Town of Carefree as the insured. She reached out to the Arizona Rangers to provide security to keep everybody safe where the race is crossing streets. The Black Mountain Coffee Shop is donating water.
Several sponsors were in the works. Kelsey is hoping to write a big check. Further information can be found on the flier and on posters that will be hung locally.

Councilman Vince D'Aliesio asked if they were capping the number of participants, and asked how many participants were expected. Kelsey said the goal is 100 participants but they might not reach that number in the first year. They will continue to solicit participants locally. Their tag line is, "22 veterans a day take their own lives, so get 22 of your friends and join the race". Vice Mayor Crane felt there was no need to cap it. Mr. Orrico said Kiwanis is promoting it. Kelsey will be presenting it to Kiwanis and to the American Legion. The American Legion Freedom Riders will kick off the event with flags on their motorcycles, and the Legion might be donating the tee shirts. "The more money saved on the cost, the more money goes to those in need." There will be 3 TV stations there at 7, 8, and 9 AM. Those who finish the race will receive "finisher" dog tags.
Vice Mayor Crane noted that Kelsey came to the Town with an idea. The Town was receptive but she ran with it and put everything together. There was a lot to that. She did a great job. Kelsey thanked the Town for the press release.
The Council unanimously approved the requested street closures, pending the insurance and security that would be forthcoming.
