Mayor Les Peterson announced that Civana would once again be holding a drone light show. Last year's was a significant success. This year they will be using 100 drones. The Community Block Party will go from 7-9:30 PM. The drone show will go from 8:45-9:00 PM. Attendees can park along the road. Part of Mule Train Road will be closed for the Block Party.
The Mayor also noted that many of Carefree's restaurants are offering attractive Happy Hour specials during the summertime. It's a great time to meet friends there and enjoy the specials.
The Foothills Caring Corps is hosting a CPR training class on Thursday, July 18th, from 9 AM-2 PM in the Council Chambers. The class is free to Carefree residents.
Ray Villafane's sand dragon is nearing completion. This whimsical creation is approximately 4' high and 8' long, and is located in the courtyard in Spanish Village by the Black Mountain Cafe and Coffee Shop. The Mayor encouraged everyone to stop by, saying it's worth seeing.
(Here are some photos Herbert took of it in progress. Enjoy!)

Mayor Peterson noted that the fiscal year ended on June 30th. Even with the streets maintenance project underway, the revenues exceeded the expenditures by approximately $860,000. Sales tax revenues were up 8% over the previous fiscal year. The Mayor was delighted to see the merchants doing well, and was delighted to receive the sales tax dollars.
Councilman Vince D'Aliesio acknowledged Rural/Metro Chief John Kraetz for pulling together the presentation on flood and fire preparedness with the Maricopa County Natural Disaster team. The meeting was very informative and well attended. "So, thank you very much." Mayor Peterson added that he had talked to Rural/Metro and was told this is the worst fire situation since the '90s, due to all the dried brush. He thanked Rural/Metro for what it has done and what it will do.
(Lyn's note: We recorded the presentation and will put out a Carefree Truth issue featuring it on Monday. It is well worth watching the video. We have had our landscaper clearing dry brush from the recommended 30' all around our house for the past couple of days. It sure grabbed our attention!)
Councilman Gene Orrico gave accolades to Marketing Director Beth Renfro. He said there are more things in COINS than ever. He felt the high point in the recent COINS was the feature on the repainting of the 100 Easy Street building (where the PO is located), and the naming of the businesses housed within. Mayor Peterson thanked Mr. Orrico for his efforts to get the building repainted.
Town Clerk Kandace French Contreras introduced Samantha Gesell, the new Planning Clerk. Mrs. Gesell was a long time area resident. She worked at Sky Ranch for 10 years and opened Janey's restaurant in Cave Creek. She and her husband moved to Telluride, Colorado six years ago and were ready to return to this area when she saw the posting for the Planning Clerk position. She is close to obtaining her Clerk certification, and will be a wonderful asset to the Town. Mrs. Gesell thanked the Council for this opportunity and said she's looking forward to getting back into the harness. She was warmly welcomed by the Council.
