Coronavirus Information
The Center of Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) has set up the following website to keep the public posted on the status of the Coronavirus and how best to protect you and your families. If you have questions regarding the Coronavirus and what to expect in the days, weeks and months ahead this is an excellent resource to receive up to date information.

This is great news about Les; he’s done a fantastic job and deserves another term as our mayor!!! Thank you.

Lyn:
More on Bike Week.
It is very encouraging to see that there will be a multi-facet effort to curb speeding, noise and other forms of selfish behavior. May it succeed.
One of last year’s experiences included what I would consider to be a major traffic violation. I am not sure what to call a group of motor cycles. We know that there is a flock of sheep, a gaggle of geese and a school of fish, or a pack of wolves. I will use a “gang of bikes”.
In the late afternoon, I was driving south on N Cave Creek Road when the light at the intersection of Carefree Highway turned red. Naturally, I stopped. The traffic light sequenced to a “left turn on green”, both for westbound traffic on Carefree Highway turning south on Cave Creek Road and for eastbound Carefree Highway turning north on to Cave Creek Road. A gang of bikes, eastbound on Carefree Highway, which I assume had come from I-17, started to turn north. I did not count, but there were dozens. When the left turn green arrow stopped, the bikes continued to roll. It was like watching a funeral procession without a police escort. Cars wanting to cross the intersection going westbound were unable to continue. The gang of bikes stopped when all eastbound lights turned red, but by that time, there were only a couple around.
I hope that the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office can have a deputy watching that intersection in the late afternoon on both Friday and Saturday.

Lyn,
I am beginning to hear comments from friends about their concerns regarding the "look" and "height" of the Hampton Inn in Carefree. Although I have not been following the development of the hotel, I try to assure them that it will not be an "eyesore" as I am pretty confident that the Carefree Town Council would not approve a new building that did not "fit" into our town's architectural desires.
I tried to look back into your previous newsletters, but I must have missed the information about the Hotel development. The only picture I found is in the following article. Is this what the hotel will look like? I just want to provide them with the facts, so that wrong information does not spread.
Katie Wilke
P.S. Thank you so much for your very informative newsletters.
(Lyn's note: Hi Katie. Sorry for the delayed response. My AOL program had become corrupted. I spent a couple of days messing with it before finally giving up and calling AOL. I managed to get the non profit events out on Wednesday, then everything started freezing. I lost all the letters from readers on Wednesday, and couldn't recreate them until AOL fixed the issue this morning, which meant going back through all my zillions of deleted emails to find what people had sent to me. OK, I'm through whining....
Here is the Carefree Truth link with the info about the Hampton Inn.

I know some people are not going to be happy with the hotel and the townhomes going in, but both comply with the zoning that has been in place for the downtown interior for many years. (Zoning for the downtown perimeter has lower height restrictions.) Both projects are utilizing a smaller footprint than did previous projects proposed for those 2 existing dirt lots. But they should help to revitalize the Town Center, a project that has been progressing for many years now. I don't know how long you have lived here, but if you've been here a while, you will remember how shabby and deteriorating the downtown had become before the Council in place at that time started fixing up what they could, that which was not private property but was Town owned. They hoped that would encourage the landlords to start fixing up their properties, which it did. The downtown looks vastly different today than it did 15 years ago.
These 2 new projects will have people staying in the downtown who want to walk places to shop and eat, which should increase sales tax revenue. STR pays for the services like police and fire protection, and street maintenance. STR accounts for over 50% of Carefree's revenue. State Shared Revenue has been steadily dropping as the State wants to keep more for itself. We do not have a local municipal property tax in Carefree. Our property taxes are from Maricopa County and the Cave Creek Unified School District. You can check that out on your property tax statement. Owners of average priced homes in Scottsdale and Phoenix pay a municipal property tax of about $3000 a year on top of the County and their school district taxes. Many homes in Carefree cost more than the average home.)
Lyn, Thank you so much for your response! I have forwarded the info to interested friends. Personally, I think it will be an asset to our community.
Sorry about your internet problems, it can be sooo frustrating! 😡
Thank you again for your newsletters! Carefree residents are so lucky to have you in our community! ☘
Hi Lyn
Just got back from the post office and no parking again. ugh
I've lived here 24 years and the flavor of the town has changed. The day they start the condos is the day I put my house on the market.

Hi Lyn,
Just got your newsletter this morning and read about the hikes to the cave in Cave Creek. Went immediately to sign up and it is already filled! How does this happen in such a short amount of time? I hope they'll have more in the near future as this is something I'd love to see.
Thanks,
Kevin Glenn
(Lyn's note: I passed Kevin's email along to John Crane, who is on the DFLT board.)
Hi Lyn:
Yes, this hike is repeated at least once or twice a quarter. I’ll send a schedule. The hike to the Cave is a hot ticket.
The DFLT agreement on the easement which allows DFLT access, limits the number of hikes that can be done.
Best regards,
John Crane
