The last time they did Cave Creek road from Tom Darlington to Pima, the company did a terrible uneven job but at that time Cave Creek also had work done and theirs was done very smoothly. Hopefully the City gets someone that knows what they are doing this time and has someone other than the last time supervise what is done before they pay.

It was so bad that it had to be scrapped down and completely resurfaced, which is why it was so much better when finished.)
The last pavement surface treatment on Cave Creek Road was completed in association with the development of the bike lanes. The project was administer by the Arizona Department of Transportation not the Town since the bike land project used federal funds as part of a regional project to connect Carefree and Cave Creek with bike lanes. At that time, the engineers at ADOT determine that the street distress on the section of roadways in Carefree were less severe (longitudinal and traverse cracking of the asphalt) than the sections within the Town of Cave Creek (alligator cracking/vertical movement/potholes). Therefore, using the universals standards to address pavement distress, ADOT programmed a mill of the existing deteriorating asphalt and new asphalt overlay on the section of Cave Creek Road in Cave Creek while in Carefree a slurry surface treatment was used due to the less severe distress. In other words, there were two different treatments based upon the pavement distress. New asphalt is always smooth as the aggregate is applied with a roller. On the other hand, slurry is a thin film of fine aggregate solution which is applied through pouring and the dragging of a applicator bib. This results in a surface that is initially rougher but as the aggregate is pushed into the existing asphalt by the vehicular traffic, it smooths out over time.
What is being proposed today in the current street maintenance project on Cave Creek Road between Carefree Drive and Pima Road is a similar combination of treatments. Cave Creek Road between Carefree Drive and Mule Train is experiencing alligator cracking and associated potholes. With the heavy traffic including a high volume of trucks it necessitates a milling of this section of roadway and new asphalt. However, between Mule Train and Pima Road, Cave Creek Road is experiencing longitudinal and traverse cracking. The universal standards of street maintenance recommends a crack seal and slurry surface treatment to appropriately deal with this pavement distress along this section of roadway. Therefore, this section receiving the slurry will appear initially less smooth than the new asphalt section but will become smoother overtime. This has nothing to do with the quality of the products or contractor but the type of treatments being used. Slurry will always be initially rougher than new asphalt but overtime as the aggregate in the slurry is pushed into the surface of the existing asphalt the surface becomes smoother. Furthermore, the type of application used is based upon the measured distress of the street and the appropriate solution to address this pavement distress.
In the next two years the Town will be completing its current cycle of street maintenance projects with approximately $7 million programmed. Through this process, the distress of the street is quantified and the appropriate solution is identified using universal standards and best practices to mitigate pavement distress.

On Saturday, January 8, 2022 Carefree Desert Gardens welcomes Dr. Jacqueline Soule, long-time southwest gardener and award-winning garden writer of 15 books as well as articles in national, regional and local publications. She has degrees from University of Arizona, Michigan State University and a Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Texas. Her postdoctoral work was at Washington State University. Dr. Soule will highlight over 30 plants that can be grown in our landscapes…pollinator friendly, HOA approved and some edibles…all that are pleasing and attractive for our fuller outdoor enjoyment throughout the year.
The program, including a plant raffle, will begin at 9:30 a.m. and run approximately until noon in the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion at 101 Easy Street. A $5.00 – or more – donation is appreciated to support these programs. For information call 480-488-3686.

American Legion Post 34 to celebrate 75-year anniversary
American Legion Post 34 turns 75 in 2022 and the veterans are planning a year chock full of events, tributes, patriotism and the celebration of freedom.
Post 34 has created a series of exciting educational and themed events to celebrate serving the community for three quarters of a century. During its anniversary, Post 34 will feature veterans’ services and giving back to community over the years.
“While we will share veteran stories throughout the years, we also will showcase the war eras and our veterans’ role in supporting freedom,” says Dan Schwerdtfeger, American Legion Post 34 commander. “For each event, living veterans will be invited to attend so they can be honored by all in attendance.”
Schwerdtfeger says American Legion Post 34 looks forward to sharing its rich history, values and honorable work with the communities it serves. The Post will implement a number of 2022 events and opportunities to demonstrate the breadth of what American Post 34 does for others.

The Beatles: The Solo Years with Vinnie Bruno

Vinnie Bruno is back! The lecture will continue in the footsteps of The Beatles story and focus on the highlights of the “solo” post-Beatles careers of John, Paul, George and Ringo. We will explore the aftermath of The Beatles legacy and how they established themselves as solo artists. Our journey will also discuss their musical collaborations with each other on many of their solo projects. Coming full circle, we will explore their last collaborative project “The Beatles Anthology” released in the late 90’s.
As a Beatles Scholar and storyteller, Vinnie Bruno embraces the Beatles' legacy while presenting entertaining, interactive, and informative programs for both the casual listener and hard-core Beatles fans. As a 60s’ Rock Historian, his program list includes historic and musical overviews of nearly 100 rock and roll musicians and groups, each of whom helped define the 50s, 60s and 70s by creating musical landscapes that captivated a generation and whose influence in popular culture still endures more than five decades later. Mr. Bruno retired as Director of First Year Programs at LaGuardia Community College (City University of New York). He holds an MPA from Baruch College and, as an adjunct professor for 25 years, taught courses in numerous disciplines including Humanities, Business and Mathematics. He currently resides in both New Jersey and Arizona.

Jubilate Conservatory of Music Fall Semester Classes

Jubilate Conservatory of Music, a school of classical music, where young students learn to read and write music, begins in-person music classes in September. The Fall Semester lasts fourteen weeks. Violin, viola, cello and choir will be instructed in an after-school format. Online lessons and classes will continue with a particular favorite, Online Collaboration, where students work together online to create a music video. Mondays 4:00-5:00 pm – Beginning Violin Class. For students 8 years and older; students learn to read music and play the violin in a focused setting with a class limited to 6 students. $364.00 for the semester plus $6.00 registration fee.
Tuesdays 4:15-5:30 pm – Jubilate Choir & Voice Class. For students age 10 and older; students learn how to sing with others in a group setting, read music and follow a director, singing several different styles of music. $364.00 for the semester plus $6.00 registration fee.
Wednesdays 4:00-5:00 pm – Ensemble for Strings. For student age 10 and older who know how to read music and play violin, viola, or cello; students enjoy playing music together in a group and increase their ability to read music and engage with other young musicians. $364.00 for the semester plus $6.00 registration fee.
Saturday 10:00-1:00 pm – Saturday Strings. For age 5yrs and older. 10:00-11:00 am – Advanced/Intermediate strings. 11:00-11:30 am – Beginning Strings (Advanced/Intermediate Students on Break). 11:30-12:00 pm – Jubilate Violin Orchestra, combined class rehearsal. $6.00 registration fee only.
Saturday 12:15-1:00 pm – Musicianship Class. For all ages, (very young children should be accompanied by their parent). Students learn to sing their way through music theory in a fun and lively classroom setting. $6.00 registration fee only.

Being a parent is one of the most challenging jobs you will ever have, as well as one of the most rewarding. The end goal is to raise, confident, self-reliant, and well-grounded children. Discover options and solutions to the support you in your daily role as a parent, towards achieving that goal.

The Beatles: The Solo Years with Vinnie Bruno

Vinnie Bruno is back! The lecture will continue in the footsteps of The Beatles story and focus on the highlights of the “solo” post-Beatles careers of John, Paul, George and Ringo. We will explore the aftermath of The Beatles legacy and how they established themselves as solo artists. Our journey will also discuss their musical collaborations with each other on many of their solo projects. Coming full circle, we will explore their last collaborative project “The Beatles Anthology” released in the late 90’s.
As a Beatles Scholar and storyteller, Vinnie Bruno embraces the Beatles' legacy while presenting entertaining, interactive, and informative programs for both the casual listener and hard-core Beatles fans. As a 60s’ Rock Historian, his program list includes historic and musical overviews of nearly 100 rock and roll musicians and groups, each of whom helped define the 50s, 60s and 70s by creating musical landscapes that captivated a generation and whose influence in popular culture still endures more than five decades later. Mr. Bruno retired as Director of First Year Programs at LaGuardia Community College (City University of New York). He holds an MPA from Baruch College and, as an adjunct professor for 25 years, taught courses in numerous disciplines including Humanities, Business and Mathematics. He currently resides in both New Jersey and Arizona.

Jubilate Conservatory of Music, a school of classical music, where young students learn to read and write music, begins in-person music classes in September. The Fall Semester lasts fourteen weeks. Violin, viola, cello and choir will be instructed in an after-school format. Online lessons and classes will continue with a particular favorite, Online Collaboration, where students work together online to create a music video. Mondays 4:00-5:00 pm – Beginning Violin Class. For students 8 years and older; students learn to read music and play the violin in a focused setting with a class limited to 6 students. $364.00 for the semester plus $6.00 registration fee.
Tuesdays 4:15-5:30 pm – Jubilate Choir & Voice Class. For students age 10 and older; students learn how to sing with others in a group setting, read music and follow a director, singing several different styles of music. $364.00 for the semester plus $6.00 registration fee.
Wednesdays 4:00-5:00 pm – Ensemble for Strings. For student age 10 and older who know how to read music and play violin, viola, or cello; students enjoy playing music together in a group and increase their ability to read music and engage with other young musicians. $364.00 for the semester plus $6.00 registration fee.
Saturday 10:00-1:00 pm – Saturday Strings. For age 5yrs and older. 10:00-11:00 am – Advanced/Intermediate strings. 11:00-11:30 am – Beginning Strings (Advanced/Intermediate Students on Break). 11:30-12:00 pm – Jubilate Violin Orchestra, combined class rehearsal. $6.00 registration fee only.
Saturday 12:15-1:00 pm – Musicianship Class. For all ages, (very young children should be accompanied by their parent). Students learn to sing their way through music theory in a fun and lively classroom setting. $6.00 registration fee only.

Parenting 101 in 2022

Being a parent is one of the most challenging jobs you will ever have, as well as one of the most rewarding. The end goal is to raise, confident, self-reliant, and well-grounded children. Discover options and solutions to the support you in your daily role as a parent, towards achieving that goal.

Learn to Paint Desert Landscapes – Tues. Jan. 11,18, 25, 9:00am – 12:00 pm. Art instructor, Larry Charles, will teach both acrylic painting and oil painting techniques at the Holland Center Art Studio. Working from photographs, each session in January will include a demonstration by Larry, followed by step-by-step guidance for you on how to create perspective, how to paint realistic shadows, how to mix lifelike colors, how to compose a landscape picture, etc. $250. Gelli Prints Basics Class: Thurs., Jan. 6, 1:00-3:00 pm. Have you ever created collage papers? They are wonderfully useful for cardmaking, journaling, bookmaking, Washi tape ( a multi purpose type of masking tape you can use in your journals, artworks, cards and more), or any art projects! Learn how to make gorgeous and quick collage papers using a soft Gelli plate. This is an introductory class for learning how to make Gelli prints.
